Failed to update permissions used for end-user recovery on . Permissions update failed for the following reason: (ID 3123)

I patched 2012 to the SP1 level and now I'm getting these warnings on many servers.

It seems to be considering these items as removable media?

Having same problem here after upgrade to SP1, tried solutions from linked article, did not solve. Shares are recreated but still are invalid.  Rebooted protected machines and DPM server.

Same issue here for me too.  When I turn off End User Recovery the errors go away. Any ideas?

Same for me too, I've tried various solutions of similar problems from DPM2010 but none appear to have worked, including giving extra permissions on the shares etc.

EUR does actually work but I get the warning message every hour when the DPM syncs, the DPM logs aren't the easiest to read either.  It does imply a permissions problem, but the shares are being created on the DPM box, and it is updating MS-Sharemapconfig in AD as far as I can see.

It was a clean install of DPM2012SP1 on a W2008R2 box, and is protecting a W2012 fileserver.

Anyone solved it yet?

Thanks

Jeff

I turned off EUR in DPM 2012 SP1 but EUR still works for my users even with it off.  Obviously something is broken here.

There was a fix for this on DPM 2012 but on SP1 this fix does not work.

Is there any update on this??

February 1st, 2013 7:44pm

I've not found any fix yet, although there is already a patch for DPM2012SP1, it doesn't claim to fix it but I was thinking of installing it.

the EUR does appear to work but just keeps throwing up the message as soon as you clear it.

Some of MS's recent SP's have caused problems, SQL2012SP1 is a complete nightmare as well.

Hi all,

same problem for me running DPM 2012 SP1 UR1 (4.1.3333.0).

I tried disabling EUR, deleting EUR shares on DPM server, re-enabling EUR. DPM created EUR shares again but the warning message remains there. Inactivating the alert doesn't solve, at the first sync it reappears. In any case EUR works well and this is the most important thing.

In my opinion there's something wrong in DPM 2012. The main evidence is in the alert itself: after having listed all the protected shares the description ends with this message "Recycle Bin, System Volume Information folder, non-NTFS volumes, DFS links, CDs, Quorum Disk (for cluster) and other removable media cannot be protected. (ID 38 Details: )". As Mark said it seems that DPM considers all the shares like removable media.

I also see the same issue in my environment. Solution as stated in the first reply doesn't work for this version of DPM (SCDPM 2012 SP1, 4.1.4414.0).

I hope someone at MS can pick this up!

I have this issue as well since running 2012 SP1 and haven't figured out yet how to fix this. Usually I would check for orphaned shares on the DPM server and/or delete all shares on the DPM server. This would fix it. But not now. I'm currently looking at the AD container cn=ms-sharemapconfiguration,cn=system,dc=nwtraders,dc=com but the security seems to be correct. I'm wondering if you can savely delete all objects in this container and DPM would recreate them, hopefully fixing the issue?

I have the same issue with DPM 2012 SP1 UR1 version 4.1.3333.0 .  It's make  problem for me, because I can't  adding new file shares to backup from one dpm server to another. I am getting error " DPM is unable to enumerate contents in <list of file shares on dpm server> .

Hello,

Im also experiencing the "Failed to update permissions used for end-user recovery" problem with DPM 2012 SP1. I've deleted the shares from the DPM server and also the entries under the MS-ShareMapConfiguration container via ADSI edit and while both the share and the AD mapping are recreated at the next sync the issue persists- EUR is totally non-functional.

Has anybody got any further with resolving this problem?

Thanks

Steve

*Update*

After performing a full resync and recovery point creation EUR is actually working again, though the error still appears in the Monitoring workspace

I am having the same issues on SP1 and again like everyone else when I turn EUR off the error goes away. Any Ideas ?

Me too, Is there a problem with the files, or just the reporting?
March 14th, 2013 12:15pm

Apparently rollup 2 for SC2012 is going to be released in April, so with a bit of luck will include a fix for this issue.

Apparently this looks like it is affecting a LOT of people!

My suggestion would be to log a case with Microsoft support so that they can fix it / know about it.

Just my 2 cents

Cheers

I'm constantly opening cases for DPM 2012 SP1 and I'm annoyed that MS doesn't acknowledge issues like this reported in the forums. It just would be nice if someone said "yes, we are aware of this and working on a fix" or "this is new to us, please open a support case". If you do open a support case you will be told that the DPM Support Queue is very full etc. (at least here in Europe). So it would just be nice if we could avoid increasing the work load on the support engineers. Just my 2 cents...

Rollup 2 doesn't fix the problem.

Has the rollup been released, can't seem to find any downloads for it, although I know it was supposed to be released early April.

Having the same issue here since updating to SP1, we're still on rollup 1 - version 4.1.3333.0.

Hopefully they'll fix it, I was hoping rollup 2 would fix it but apparently not.

Hello All,

I complete re-installed the DPM 2012 SP1 environment, So a new Windows 2012 Server, A fresh installation of DPM including a new Database. I configured the protection as well as the EUR options and now it works.

So it seems only an issue for environments upgraded from DPM 2012 to DPM 2012 SP1 and not for greenfield environments.

Regards,

Stephan

Getting the same warning alerts for three of my protected computers.

Is anyone getting anywhere with this?

has Microsoft confirmed the bug?

I am also getting this problem AGAIN. Its a bit deja-vu because I was the one that created the other post about DPM 2010 that is linked to above.

I'm not sure what is causing this but as said above it seems to be a different issue than it was previously.

I've also had the agent issues etc with the broken rollup3 http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2013/07/30/important-update-on-dpm-2012-sp1-update-rollup-3-issues-and-workarounds.aspx?PageIndex=2#comments

So I'm starting to get really annoyed with Microsoft again, and their lack of care and support of DPM

Please fix, or at least acknowledge there is a problem. I too can't find an easy way to log this 'officially' without paying.

I had a case open with Microsoft support for some time now and last week I've been told "won't fix for DPM 2012" and they couldn't even tell me if the issue has been fixed in R2!.

I'm having this issue as well, have tried deleting the shares as advised by others and the broken shares come back with the same error.  SP1, rollup 3.  EUR is not working at all for our domain with DPM 2012.

Has anyone found a fix yet?

I am using DPM 2012 R2, what finally worked to me to resolve my problem with EUR was to:

  • In DPM I disabled EUR
  • In Computer Management delete all DPM Shares (\\?\c:\Program Files\...)
  • Using ADSI edit go to CN=MS-ShareMapConfiguration,CN=System,DC=X,DC=Y (Replace X & Y for your domain)
  • Delete all of the mappings within the container
  • In DPM enable EUR
  • In DPM on a protection group I created a new recovery point and selected Only synchronize (available only for file data)

June 17th, 2014 9:01am

Hi,

We have a confirmed bug that if you protect a file server either by volume or individual shares and have DPM end user recovery (EUR) enabled, you will get the nag warnings if you also add BMR protection for the file server.    If that is not your configuration and you receive the alerts, please open a support case for further investigation.

Hi,

The issue is not fixed yet in DPM 2012 R2, however the easy workaround is to leave the active alert and no new ones will be raised.
