FIM installation and synchronisation basics
Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and FIM in general and so I have a number of questions :-) For a solution I have been working on for some time we use Microsoft IIFP to sync directories, but we are looking to update this before if goes EOL. FIM seems to closely align with what we use IIFP for; so.... Can I simply deploy the synchronisation service and its associated DB (I don't install any other components) to do a simple synchronisation of 2 or more AD Forests and provision contacts objects within the target Forest from user objects within the many source Forests? Both the sync service and its DB can be placed on the same server, but I assume if I want resiliency I will separate them out i.e. is the sync service cluster aware? if it isn't do I simply separate out the service from the DB and use NLB for the service and Clustering for he DB? From a license perspective do I then simply need any server related licences, but no CAL related licenses when just deploying the sync service and its DB? Any information would be appreciated. Hello Dave, strictly speaking, IIFP has been end-of-life for quite a while (oct 2008, read more here and here) IIFP is a free version of MIIS/ILM (which has become FIM Sync now)... So you should be able to migrate your current configuration to FIM. Yes, you can deploy the FIM Sync service in a GALSync scenario. The FIM Sync service is not cluster aware (ILM wasn't either)... But you can use miisactivate to fail over FIM Sync to a standby server... For resilience you could host the DB on a cluster. Check out these posts on the topic: - ILM 2007 clustering (Check for Alex and David's blogposts) - Hardware for MIIS/SQL and fail-over? From a license perspective, if you only use the FIM Sync component, you simply need a server license. When you want to use the FIM portal or CLM, you'll have to buy CALS. Check it out here. HI Peter, Thanks very much for your posting. At the moment we use a custom dll and the lcssync.dll to provision objects within the target forest; would this still be the same or a similar process? I have also completed a little more reading and it mentions that you have to define synchronisation rules within the FIM Portal and within the diags it also shows the FIM service. Does that mean that I do have to deploy the FIM service and Portal in my particular scenario? Regards, Dave

AFAIK, no. If you run your config in IIFP you should be able to transfer the config to FIM Sync, without portal or FIM service. (Read this and Substitute for MIIS) Which is the info you're reffering to? (To put it in the proper context...) Hi Peter, One last querie after reading that post post is that FIM 2010 RTM is installed on W2k8 / W2k8 R2 x64. I believe the LCSSync.dll is x86; I know usually x86 will run in WOW64, but in relation to FIM using the .dll will this be a problem? Regards, Dave
