FIM installation
Hi, I'm trying to install the FIM 2010 on windows server 2008 r2. I was following the guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg637903(v=ws.10) and i'm now in the 7th step. I'm stuck in the Configure Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service page, when i click next , it gives me the following message: " Forefront identity manager synchronization service evaluation is having trouble contacting sql server using the provided information. Please note that Forefront identity manager synchronization service evaluation reqiurs microsoft sql server 2008 sp1 or better. verify the version, server and instance names as well as firew .. " I'm using microsoft sql server 2008 r2

This can also mean it can't connect to the server using the info you've given it. For example is there a named instance? If so you need to specify that too.http://www.wapshere.com/missmiis

I'm logging on the FIM server as the domain admin (Gaston, I didn't really understand your question )

Well, if you installed SQL Server with you domain admin, you propably are but otherwise you have to grant that right. "To be able to install FIM Synchronization Service or FIM Service, the account must be a SQL sysadmin. You do not have to be a sysadmin after the installation is complete." http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff512686%28WS.10%29.aspx

You might also need the "SQL 2008 native client" on your FIM server. Not sure if lacking that would cause the error you have. But it will definately cause troubles when upgrading FIM. If you can't manage to get it right from within the configuration wizard of FIM, you might try to make it easier: * try creating an ODBC connection on the FIM server as a simple test. Does that work?http://setspn.blogspot.com

For the SQL native client , it's already in the FIM server, so it's not the source of the error. I will try the ODBC connection .

Is the SQL server local or remote? If remote you need to allow inbound connection for TCP 1433 in local firewall on the SQL server. Are you using SQL alias? If so i think you need to make sure you use the SQL client from the SQL server media not the standalone download (they differ for some reason)

ODBC doesn' work (error 10060) The SQL server is remote, the inbound connection is allow for TCP 1433, tcp 455 and udp 1434 in local firewall of the SQL server. @Kent: what's the difference between the standalone client and the one from the sql server media ?

It is *the* problem -- FIM will not install on SQL Server Express. Please review the server requirements here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh332708(v=ws.10).aspx

Regarding the SQL client. As far as I know the difference is that the standalone download does not include the SQL WMI provider required in some cases (backup/restore) in SharePoint.
