FIM install failure - says the SharePoint Timer Service isn't started
Right after I click "Install," I get an error message:
"The Sharepoint Timer service is not running... Retry or Cancel"
The service is indeed running.
I've tried just about everything I can think of but I am still left scratching my head... in desperate need of some help on this one.

Can you go into Services and tell me the name of SP timer Service? it should be something like SPTimer3 or SPTimer# etc, Also what version of Sharepoint are you using? and is the service "running"?
Also can you run the msi installer to log to a text fle? for example: msiexec /i installer.msi /l*v log.txt

Just to be sure: what SharePoint version do you use? It should be
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 x64 with SP2
