FIM and mailbox provisioning on different Exchange servers
Hi, We have an environment with different versions of Exchange (Exchange 2003 & 2007). The Exchange 2007 environment is further subdivided into different Service Pack levels - so they're not consistent. So my questions/commets are: In the FIM AD MA, we can select a specific version of Exchange (e.g. Exchange 2007) - so does this mean I can only provision to THAT version of Exchange using the MA? Is is advised to install the Exchange Management Console on the FIM server - does it matter that the console might be a different Service Pack to the actual Exchange server? Or must they match? Outside of using the AD MA to provision mailboxes, I assume we could use custom code with powershell? Thank you, SK

Hi- For Exchange 2007 you'll need to install the management tools on the FIM server. I would just install the latest Service Pack (SP3) version. You will have issues provisioning to two Exchange versions at once, though. One option would be to use seperate AD MAs, but, that will restrict your ability to do references as well as complicate provisioning. In the case of Exchange 2003 you would want neither as the RUS will simply pick-up new mailboxes if you write to the right attributes. My Book - Active Directory, 4th Edition My Blog - www.briandesmond.com

Thanks Brian - so from what you are saying -> if I install the latest version of the exchange 2007 console on FIM, it should have no issues in provisioning mailboxes on different exchange 2007 SP versions.

That's correct. Exchange 2007 does the work locally so you'll be just fine.My Book - Active Directory, 4th Edition My Blog - www.briandesmond.com
