FIM R2 Upgrade Issue with Portal/Service server
I was following the checklist from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134291(v=ws.10).aspx to do my upgrade to R2 and during the upgrade for my Portal/Service server I got an error at the very end saying that it could not start the FIM Service Service. When trying to manually start it, it would start and then stop right away. I clicked cancel on that installer which proceeded to... remove the FIM Service entirely. I did take a backup beforehand. I then found this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134458(v=ws.10) which recommends upgrading SharePoint prior to doing the upgrade. So I went ahead and did that and re-ran the Service/Portal upgrade. This time it did not appear that it detected a previous install, but the install did complete successfully. As far as I can tell everything is there and working ok except for one thing. All images do not display in the Portal from any client including the Service/Portal server itself. They just show up with the standard white box, black border, red X. I have not done thorough testing yet so there may be other issues. My questions are: 1) because of the botched upgrade, is there anything I should restore from the Service/Portal backup and 2) any recommendation on fixing the image issues (maybe resolved if restoring?)? Thanks. UPDATE: Also appears that any javascript functions do not work. If I go to Users and try to search, for example, nothing happens. Same thing if I try open a Sync Rule in the Portal.

Some more info. I'm seeing this in the SharePoint Administration Console under the Health Analyzer: [MissingSiteDefinition] 1 Sites in database [WSS_Content] has reference(s) to a missing site definition, Id = [10005], Lcid = [1033]. The site definitions with Id 10005 is referenced in the database [WSS_Content], but is not installed on the current farm. The missing site definition may cause upgrade to fail. Please install any solution which contains the site definition and restart upgrade if necessary. Also, if I go on the Portal server and use https://localhost/IdentityManagement the home page displays fine with all the images showing up properly. If I click on anything else, again like Users for example, I can't search and none of the images show up except the top FIM 2010 Banner and my custom logo in the upper Right. This is consistent through all the various pages. Top banner display and custom logo but nothing else and I can't search or interact with any menu item that pops up a new window.

Tried running a repair install with no luck, same issues persist.

Just bumping to see if anyone has any suggestions. Should I just try standing up a new Portal server? Would that have any negative consequences?

I'd just set up a new Portal site with Sharepoint 2010 Foundation--there's little or no state in the WSS database that you'd want to preserve. Certainly the current condition is repairable but it is not time/cost-effective unless you're very well-acquainted with Sharepoint.
