Probably worth mentioning that I've tried a couple of different installers: TechNet and Eval. MS Installer 4.5 installed with .Net Framework 3.5.1.

if u use the same command but specify something for /LogFile.... should u get something? do u have powershell on ur machine?

Yes missed that one, PowerShell required for FIM Service installation.. RTFM ;-)
