Extra fields in lists & items out of order when creating site from template
In our MOSS 2007 environment, we have created a site template that includes several custom lists. I've moved that site template to several site collections without incident -but I have one site collection where, when I create a new site based on that template, several of the lists have extra columns (last name phonetic, first name phonetic, company phonetic) plus the default columns that come with the base list type (contacts in this case). The list stored in the template doesn't have those columns, and we have deleted many of the default contact columns in our template list. The order of the fields in the newly create site/list isn't correct either. I can take that same site template, copy it to another site collection and when I create a new site from it, everything is correct. Any ideas what could be wrong in that one site collection? I can't re-create it because we have lots of other info in it - I just need to create new sites based on this new template within that site collection. Thanks -JJ

Take a look at the Content Types that the custom lists inherit from e.g. Item. The content types can be modified on a per site collection basis. The fact that you are seeing extra columns tells me that one of the parental/base content types has these extra fields defined in it. To get your site to deploy on that particular site collection you'd have to modify the base content types to remove the extra columns.I trust that answers your question... You are correct that those fields are part of the underlying content type - but, I don't want to change the underlying content type for all lists on that site collection, because there are other lists based on that content type that I don't want to change - I just want the site created from the template to have the same list items as the site I created the template from?
