Exiting word doesnt prompt sharepoint check-in dialog, like when closing word.
Icheck out a file from sharepoint, and edit it in word and save.If i use the office menu, and close, i am prompted to check-in. However, if i exit the applicaiton by using the top right X button, i am not prompted.does anyone know why this is? Our users want to always be prompted, no matter how they exit. Is this possible? If i dont save, and click X however, i am prompted to save, and then to check in.Any help would be much appreciated.ThanksSteven

Hello Steven, I test in my environment (Office SharePoint Server 2007 + Office 2007 Enterprise), the prompts occur in both scenarios. Agree with Ivan that please let us know the version number of your SharePoint and Office client. Best Regards, Lionel

Hello Steven, Based on my test, there are 4 scenarios: 1. Check out a .DOC/.DOCX file, make change, save, and click X to close: Prompt received to check in. 2. Check out a .DOC/.DOCX file, make change, and click X to close: Receive prompt to save the document, click Yes, received prompt to check in; Click No, receive prompt to discard draft. 3. Check out a .DOC/.DOCX file, make no change, save, and click to close: Prompt received to check in. 4. Check out a .DOC/.DOCX file, make no change, and click X to close: Not receive the prompt and the file keep checked-out. All the first 3 scenarios could receive check-in prompts. If the issues you described belong to the 4th one, its a by design behavior. If it belongs to 2nd scenario and the prompt doesnt occur, please let us know the following information: 1. The scope of the issue: How many client computers are involved and what are the situations (operating system, group policy, etc.) of the involved clients. 2. The ULS log located in the \12\logs\ during the issue occurs, please check it and let us know if there is any related error/event logged when the user quit the Office client and click to save the document. Thanks! Best Regards, Lionel

Hi, I have experienced the same problem (using MOSS 2007 SP1 and Office 2007 Professional Plus SP2). This happens from XP, Vista and Windows 7 clients. Further to the above details, this lack of checkin prompt only occurs with Word, not with Excel or Powerpoint. Also, if the local drafts location points to the client C:\ drive, the prompt appears as expected. If the local drafts location is set to a network share, the prompt does not always appear. With regards to Lionel's 4 scenarios (using Word documents, with SharePoint drafts folder pointing at a network share): 1. I get no prompt to check in, document remains checked out. 2. I am prompted to save, I click Yes; Then I am prompted to check in, I click No, the document simply closes - no prompt to discard draft. 3. I receive no prompt at all, document closes and remains checked out. 4. Behaves exactly as you mention (no prompt, document remains checked out). Currently, the client Documents folder (or My Documents in XP) is redirected to a network share (for reasons of resilience, backups etc), which is why the default local drafts folder points to a network share. I am mostly concerned about scenario 1. The others I can live with. I'd appreciate any insights into why this occurs and how I can fix / workaround it. Kind Regards, Neil.

As i said, if i dont save, and click X, i do get prompted to check-in. However, if i do save, then click X, i dont get prompted to check-in Hi! I have exactly the same symptoms as Steven. Problem with this issue is that some users check-out a document, make changes, then press the save button in usual way, forget to check document back in and hit the close button. Then document remains checked-out and others can’t make changes. I got MOSS 2007 and Office 2007. Tested on different machines and found, that on some workstations, Word always prompts to check-in a document and on some workstations it does not prompt if I save document first and then press X. As Neil said, this issue occurs when drafts folder is set to a network path. But not always, sometimes it prompts to check-in a document even when drafts folder is set to a network. Can’t figure out, what is causing this and how to make sure all workstations even those, that have drafts on network, will prompt to check in when closing Word. Is this a bug of Word 2007 or what?

I found this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2025595. It appears there is nothing we can do about it. In our environment I just disable the local drafts folder by choosing “The web server” in Word, Save options instead of “The server drafts location on this computer”. This is ok for local computers that are always connected to the network. On mobile computers I set to use a folder on local C: or D: drive. I tried this with Word 2010 and it appears there is no such problem with 2010 version.
