Exclude Database from Backup Site Server Task

Hi,

I am using SCCM 2012 sp1 on Windows server 2008 r2 and a remote SQL 2008 R2 server. I am backing up the site Database using Netbackup which is now allowed, so I don't need to back up the SCCM database again using the Backup Site server task. However, I need to be able to do a restore if things go wrong, so I need to enable the Backup Site server task to backup the control files etc, but exclude backing up the database (not possible in the gui).  I have looked at the Smsbkup.ctl to see if I can exclude the database, but this does not seem to be possible.

Has anyone else done this the can give me any suggestions? Also has anyone tried a restore by backing up using this alternative method?

You don't need to use the maintenance task at all. You can fully restore a Config Mgr 2012 site using the database backup alone.

I don't think there is a way to "Backup Site Serve -Excluding DB" using the maintenance task in SCCM but it will be definitely nice to have it!

However in SCCM 2012, you can restore a Site Database if the DB was backed up bypass the Backup Site Server maintenance task (e.g. Netbackup) by selecting Use a site database that has been manually recovered option when you do the recovery. But I still recommend using the built-in maintenance task Backup Site Server as this backups up other things which makes recovery smoother.

No it doesn't. Well, using the built-in backup just prepopulates some wizard pages. Apart from that both ways are equal.

The configuration.mof would be lost, in a SQL only backup.

so I guess we should use file backup to backup inboxes folder and restore whatever needed from that.

thanks.
