Exchange 2003 & 2010 Coexistence Period (Change NameSpace)

Hello,

I have question on changing the namespace.

Currently my organisation is on Exchange 2003 and planning to move on to Exchange 2010. We use the external namespace is OWA.companyname.co.in and want it to change to mail.companyname.com when implementing exchange 2010. Is this possible??

If yes I can change the namespace when installing the 1st CAS, Do I need to rename the existing namespace on Exchange 2003 to legacy.company.co.in or it does not matter should I leave it as it is ???

My concern is simple I want to change the namespace from owa.companyname.co.in to mail.company.com. Please help me on my concern with your valuable inputs in the details.

Thanks

Prashant

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your input. Links suggested by you are not exactly answering my questions and are not clear.

Can anyone help me and give me a concrete answer on my question.

My question is, I want to change the NameSpace from owa.companyname.co.in to mail.companyname.com when introducing 1st  exchange 2010  CAS Server. If yes, Then Should I rename the existing namespace to legacy.companyname.co.in or not?

I am expecting a detailed answer.

Thanks

Hi Kolarp,

Thank you for your question.

By my understanding, you should rename the exiting namespace. Because Exchange 2010 will define compant.co, so some services will become unavailable if we didnt modify the Exchange 2003 namespace. otherwise, it will has a conflict.

If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for your response. I am putting down my concern in detail below:

My organization is currently on exchange 2003 and planning to migrate to Exchange 2013. As you know we cannot directly move to exchange 2013 we will be doing it in double hop. Exchange 2003 to 2010 then to 2013.

Now, My organization has decided to change the namespace from owa.contoso.co.in to mail.contoso.com.
I have gone through many articles and blogs on internet but all of them say only about using the existing namespace when installin CAS server and then rename the legacy.

I want to know is can i change the namespace to mail.contoso.com from owa.contoso.co.in when installing first 2010 CAS. If yes, Please let me know in details how can I achieve it, Also considering exchange 2013 as well.

what I am assuming is when I build a exchange 2010 environment I will start with new name space mail.contoso.com and make necessary DNS entry and install required certificates.

For an example I will move couple of mailboxes from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010. Now the mailbox users on 2010 will start using the new name space for owa, active sync etc ..these mailboxes are now no more related to exchange 2003 and should work fine with the new namespace. And the users on 2003 still can use the old namespace. What I am trying to tell is there shouldn't be need of renaming the namespace in the legacy environment as we are changing the namespace in 2010 environment.

I will be waiting for your response. Not only you, from every one who has answer to my question.

Hi Kolarp,

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry that I misunderstand, if we change the namespace to mail.contoso.com from owa.contoso.co, we could refer to the following command:

  1.        Install contoso.com in organization then migrate user account using ADMT by the following link:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc974332(v=ws.10).aspx

  1.        Install new Exchange 2010 in contoso.com, then remote migrate user mailbox to Exchange 2010:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee861103(v=exchg.150).aspx

If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.

Best Regard,

Jim
