Exception thrown when adding the Apply Windows Settings step to a Task Sequence
ConfigMgr 2007 version 4.00.6221.1000
Windows Server 2008, ENT SP1
When adding the Apply Windows Settings task step to a Task Sequence, a dialog box with the following error appears:
"Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"
When clicking the Details >> button within the dialog box, it states:
"Object reference not set an an instance of an object"
This site server has been recently recovered from a system failure via the ConfigMgr Site Repiar Wizard and all components are reporting as healthy. Other features are performing as expected, and we can perform OS deployments successfully without that
particular step by passing an unattended answer file within the Apply Operating System step.
There are no relevant entries within the Application log and I can't find any applicable information within any of the ConfigMgr logs (would the modification of a Task Sequence be logged anywhere anyway?). Considering the prerequsities of the OSD feature,
I have already performed the following:
> Recycled the SMS Executive service
> Recycled the site server
> Removed / reinstalled the WAIK for Windows 7
Which object is being evoked when adding that particular Task Sequence step?
I'd very much appreciate some input on this situation. Thank you.

if you create a default task sequence (right click in task sequences, select new task sequence, select install an existing image package and continue with the wizard) does the
apply windows settings step show up correctly in that task sequence ?
also check your ..:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\AdminUI\AdminUILog and see what snippets of useful info you find around the time of the failure in the SmsAdminUI.log
is MDT integrated ?
