Hi Hari,if you are using FBA, make sure that you check the "save password" box in the form.Cheers, Daniel Bugday Web: SharePoint Forum Blog: Daniel Bugday's SharePoint Blog

If you are not using FBA :) then look at the Office programs installed on your own PC and your friend's PC and then look at the settings for .xls (etc.) file types to see which application has been set to open .xls files. In this case it's not the fact that you are using your name/password to access the SharePoint site but the settings on the client PC.WSS FAQ sites: http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com and http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com Total list of WSS 3.0 / MOSS 2007 Books (including foreign language) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/v3%20WSS%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

It's the standard "file types" setting for the PC where you specify which application will open a file of a particular type (and how). Hi, Does Your Friend have the same permissions as you have on the document and the site? Please perform the following steps and see whether the issue is resolved. 1. Open internet explorer -At tools - internet options - General Tab - Clear cache and cookies- 2. At security Tab - make sure that site is added to the local intranet sites 3. In the custom level, make the authentication settings - Prompt for user name and password. 4. At Advanced Tab- Uncheck the 'Enable Integrated Windows Authentication, if checked. 5. Restart IE and try again.Make sure that when you are opening the exel file on your friends PC, you are prompted for a user name and password. Regards, Aj (http://www.ajittgeorge.blogspot.com) MCTS

Which version of Office are you using on both pc's Furthermore, adding the portal site to intranet zone as trusted, creates a situation in which IE will logon to the portal for you. Concerning the read only, also take a look at this : http://sharepoint.vanglabbeek.nl/index.php/2009/09/11/problems-with-updating-word-2003-documents/ last question : do you logon to the portal with the same name (from both computers ) ? Hari, Few more checks needed for clarification : 1. Do the user ( your colleague have permissions on the site ) ? 2. What type of site you have the issue wit - Intranet/internet/extranet 3. On the Vista machine, Is it possible to open other excel files from other sites without error. 4. Is the sharepoint support feature running in the Office suit installed over the Vista machine. 5. Try upgrading your colleagues permission on the excel document and see whether the file is opening readonly. 6. Have you done the settings, i suggested last time to make the logon auth. settings. Hari, There is no fixed solution for the weird issue us to go troubleshooting to the max. extend. Try these settings : 1. Open IE - Add the site to trusted sites. 2. Clear the Cookies and temporary internet files. 3. At Start - Run - Type - %temp%- In the web folder opening- 4. See what settings are there for hidden files - Select the option to show all hiddedn files. 5. Permanently delete all the files, Note : Some temp files created today maynot get deleted, unselect those files and delete the rest. Open a fresh IE page, keep a blank excel file open, and try opening the file. Also try stopping the Web Client service, and try openig the file.Regards, Aj (http://www.ajittgeorge.blogspot.com) MCTS

Hi, The issue may be caused that URLScan is installed on the server. It is not allowing the OPTIONS call that is made by the client machines when opening files from the server. This will cause the file to open read only. To resolve this issue, please try to Configure URLScan to allow the option call. Or remove URLScan from the server. For more information on the OPTIONS command/verb is available in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838028 More information on the URLScan tool: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/cc242650.aspx Let me know if I misunderstand you. Request will be rejected.[10-26-2009 - 10:27:15] Client at XXXXXX: Sent verb 'OPTIONS', which is not specifically allowed. Request will be rejected.Regards,Hari

I had the same problem, however it was caused by having the default web browser set to a different product. Restore IE as the default web browser and happy days again!
