Error when clicking on New Document button in SharePoint 2003 document library
Environment:
I have SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP3 and Windows SharePoint Services SP2 installed on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 Standard Edition server (x86).
History:
I had Office 2003 Prof installed. I installed Office 2007 Prof in hopes that it would make SharePoint work with the Office 2007 file formats. Then, 'Edit in Datasheet' feature stopped working, so I uninstalled Office 2007 and re-installed Office 2003. I found
out that my ows.js file was still the old version (pre-WSS 2.0 SP2), and found a solution on a forum to fix the 'Edit in Datasheet' issue by adding a one-line funtion to ows.js. That fixed the issue.
I followed the instructions on a Microsoft KB article to get SharePoint to work with Office 2007 files, including editing the docicon.xml file. I still didn't have the correct icons showing in document libraries for some file types. So, I uninstalled
Office 2003 and re-installed Office 2007.
Issue:
At this point, when I click on the 'New Document' button in any doc library, I now receive the following 'Message from webpage' error:
'New Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater. To add a document to this document library, click the 'Upload Document' button.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Another side effect of this is that I no longer see an 'Edit in Microsoft Office Word' option in the drop down menu for Word documents.
It was suggested to uninstall Office 2007 Professional and call Microsoft Support to get help with removing all files and registry keys left from any Office installations.

You should always keep the Server Pack levels at the same level. If they are different it is the *WSS* one which could (still
not advisable) be greater.
Clearly here your Service Packs are out-of-sync. Even if it possibly has no connection with this problem you should removed
SPS 2003 SP3 and then add (in that order) WSS SP3 and SPS 2003 SP3.
2010 Books: SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc.
2007 Books:
WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow
Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.
