Error when attempting to Update Farm Credentials using stsadm command
When executing the following command stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin [login name] -password [password] I get the following error Error updating the administration application pool credentials. Need help in updating my farm credentials and the only tool available generates a vague, non descript error. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. As a result of not being able to update the credentials I get the error message that the service is unavailable when launching the SharePoint Configuration Database.

Do you see any errors in the ULS logs? I hope you've already changed the password for that particular account in the AD. Have you tried providing the password in the app_pool for the central admin directly?HK

I believe the account being used is the same one as the CentralAdministration Application Pool account, so you can check in IIS which account you are really using. This surely is not correctwording "updatefarmcredentials", plus you get this error,"Error updating the administration application pool credentials".Huh, something isnot correct.I found the answer. If you restart the SQL Server service on the SQL Server this will fix the issue with not being able to open the Central Administration SiteYou then should be able to run the stsadmin script again. Just make sure the password is reset, if it has expired or you cannot remember it, and you are using the correct domain account. chrisdoran

I just troubleshooted the same error. It was due to running the command under credentials that did not have farm admin access. Running the command as a farm administrator fixed the issue.http://randomdust.com/blogs/ryan

Hi All,My Problem has now been successfully resolved. I have updated my SharePoint Administrator Password. Following are the steps to resolve the problem. 1. Click Start > Goto Run > Type Services.msc and press Enter2. Stop all those services which are running through SharePoint Administrator Account (e.g. xyzDomain\abcUser). You can check it from Log On As column in services.msc screen. Do it on all SharePoint Farm Servers. In my case i have stopped following services. Services on SharePoint Front End Server - Microsoft Single Sign-on Service - Office Document Conversions Launcher Service - Office Document Conversions Load Balancer Service - Office SharePoint Server Search - Windows SharePoint Services Search - Windows SharePoint Services TimerServices on SharePoint DB Server - SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) - SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) - SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) - SQL Server Browser - SQL Server FullText Search (MSSQLSERVER) - SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)3. Now right click each service and click Properties. 4. In Properties window click on Lon On tab 5. Now Enter username and password (e.g. Username: xyzDomain\abcUser, Password: **********) and start the service6 Repeat steps from 3 - 5 for each stopped service due to step 2 7. Restart all SharePoint Farm Machines 8. Now run following stsadm commands to update the passwordstsadm –o updatefarmcredentials –userlogin DOMAIN\username -password ********stsadm –o updatefarmcredentials –userlogin DOMAIN\username -password ********stsadm –o osearch –farmserviceaccount DOMAIN\username -farmservicepassword ********stsadm –o spsearch –farmserviceaccount DOMAIN\username -farmservicepassword ********stsadm –o editssp –title SharedServices1 -ssplogin DOMAIN\username -ssppassword ******** In my case all this works for me....
