Error on alert for two different views of same MOSS 2007 list
I have a list configured with two different views that I am using in separate webparts to show upcoming and overdue review dates. I am trying to set up a separate alert for when something changes in each of the views. The first alert works fine, the second alert gives me the following error: Exception occurred. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80020009 (DISP_E_EXCEPTION)) Is there a problem with setting up two alerts on the same list, or is there something else going on? Thanks, Laura

Alerts are at List level (not View within a List level). You can only have one Alert per List OOB. (Trying to add the Alert when in a different view doesn't alter that fact.) FAQ sites: (SP 2010) http://wssv4faq.mindsharp.com; (v3) http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com and (WSS 2.0) http://wssv2faq.mindsharp.com Complete Book Lists (incl. foreign language) on each site.

Mike, I often create multiple Alerts on the same list. Where have you run into only being able to have one per list? You are right about views making no difference... the alert is on the list not the view. Mike Smith TechTrainingNotes.blogspot.com

When I go to set up the alert there is an option to be notified when "Someone changes an item that appears on the following view" which then gives me a pull-down menu for all of the views that I've created for that list; this is under the "Send Alerts for These Changes" section towards the bottom of the page. It worked exactly that way for the first alert that I set, but then I got the error on the second. It seems that you can set an alert for a particular view - at least that is the way that I interpret those options? I've got conflicting responses on whether you can set more than one alert on the same list? Doing the additional research, the specific exception error that is coming up seems to apply to a lot of different situations - any other thoughts on that for this specific situation? Thanks, Laura

Ah! Task lists and views with Filters... Views with a "where" (Filter) can be used for alerts. I keep forgetting this. :-( I have not seen that error before with alerts and the error is a "generic" error. Have you looked in the Windows event viewer or the SharePoint logs? I just did a test on both a WSS and a MOSS install and I could create mulitple alerts both on "lists" and "views" and they worked fine. (I received duplicate alert emails after changes.) This won't help with your problem, but may provide some background on alerts on views for other people who find this discussion: http://blumenthalit.net/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=95Mike Smith TechTrainingNotes.blogspot.com
