Error in Sharepoint 2007 Configuration Wizard - Failed to register Sharepoint services.
Hello,
I am attempting an in-place upgrade of a Sharepoint 3.0 installation to MOSS 2007 in a test environment. When running the configuration wizard, it gets to step 6 of 12 and then throws the following error:
Failed to register Sharepoint services.
An exception of type System.ArgumentNullException was thrown. Additional exception information: Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: path
During the installation, I had selected the "stand-alone" option, to install MOSS on top of Sharepoint 3.0 and use SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition as the database server.
I am logged in under the domain administrator account, which I have given full privileges in SQL server.
Environment information:
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2
Intel Pentium D 3.2Ghz CPU
4G RAM
The log file was extremely long, but I can post it if anyone wants to see it.
I have searched forums all over the internet, and have yet to find any good leads on how to go about solving this.
I am very new to Sharepoint, so any information that could point me in the right direction on this would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!

Which exact version of WSS 3.0 were you upgrading to MOSS 2007 ?
I.e. for instance which Service Packs are installed?
Also how large are your databases. The built-in db system used in a single server installation of WSS 3.0 has no limits; the equivalent for a MOSS 2007 installation is limited to 4GB.
2010 Books: SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc.
2007 Books:
WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow
Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.

Thanks for your fast reply. I was just able to return to this project today.
WSS 3.0 has Service Pack 2 installed, as well as the Octobor '09 Cumulative Update.
The databases are only about 1.5 GB in size.

Yes, I have run the configuration wizard several times, always receiving the same error. I have also tried the following suggestions from another forum, but still receive the same error after each change:
1) Changing the security account under the "Identity" tab of the Sharepoint Central Administration site application pool in IIS.
2) Changing the log-in account for the Sharepoint Services Search service to the administrator account.
Microsoft Office is not installed on my machine.
