Do you have a backup of your server? Restoring machine.config from that backup might be the easiest way out.

Is your application an internet facing or FBA based application? Is it having anonymous access? What is the exception you are getting when you are trying to open the Central Administration site? BR, PM

Are you trying to access Central Administration from the SP server itself? Hi, If the above suggestions did not solve your problem, you can let us know more about your issue. I once received this generic error when my application was moved to public facing site. That time, I just had to open my web.config and comment the <authentication mode="windows"> and my application worked. Just an idea!!BR, PM
