Error: The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service

I am unable to get the Search functionality working in my SP site.  I have a new SP farm (2 app, 2 web, 1 sql) which I am working on configuring.  I've migrated a site collection from my development environment which appears to be fully functional other than the Search.  I created a seperate Enterprise Search site and that works fine.  This leads me to believe it's something specific with the site or the search service application I configured.

When I search for something on the site it throws the error:  The search request was unable to connect to the Search Service.

When I view the search service application in CA it shows over 300 searchable items, crawls completing successfully, etc.  I verified my site has the correct service application association selected.  I think my Enterprise Search site uses a different search service application though (FAST Query SSA).  I think I've gone through all the settings to verify the correct account is being used.  Any advice on what I can do/try next?  Thank you!

Hi,

to check which SSA your site used go to CA >> Web App >> Service Connections >> Check if it is connected to SharePoint SSA or FAST SSA

Thanks for your quick reply!  The service connections are the default which has both "Search Service Application" and "FAST Query SSA" checked.

You can't have two Default SSA , please check only the required SSA

Ok I tried that and it didn't seem to do anything.  I noticed the Entrprise Search site I created, which works, has them both checked as well... strange, eh?

Hi,

Do you mean the migrated site collection has a search site center which displayed the above error and you created enterprise search site under this site collection and the search working fine so I think the problem is

1- Default SSA is SharePoint SSA and not FAST SSA

2- the template of the search center which has a problem is FAST Search template and that is reason of the above error

I reckon the most likely is that in central admin

1.click manage web appliactions

2.select the problamatic web app then click service connections in the manage section of the ribbon

3. Check that your search service is there and the box is ticked(; I had this problem and did not notice that is was not ticked as it is hard to see as it is greyed when you have the defualt selected), if not change to custom in the drop down and tick it all the services you require

And very important point ( which is for me ! )

1)Go to Edit Page in Search Center

2) Edit Web Part for Search Core Result

3) Open up Location Properties and Check Location

4) If Location is set to "Local Fast Search Result" then this would give the error. Set this to "None"

This worked for my case
