Error: PXE-E53: No boot filename received

Hi,

Keep getting the PXE-E53 error when I try to PXE boot.

Infrastructure

Primary server (SCCM 2012 R2) (9.9.9.9)

DP1: Not PXE-enabled (1.1.1.1)

DP2: Not PXE-enabled (2.2.2.2)

DP3: PXE-enabled (3.3.3.3)

DHCP server: Options 60, 66 & 67 not set (4.4.4.4)

Network setup

This is the last of the PXE log, it was last changed after case 1. Nothing happened to it after case 2 and case 3.

Anyone got some ideas what might cause this error?

Have you distributed both the x86 and x64 boot images to the DP?

Hello,

Did you install DHCP role on the pxe-enabled DP?

I noticed that DHCP option 60 is configured which is only required when DHCP and WDS roles are installed on the same server.

Jeff, both images are distributed.

Daniel, no I did not install DHCP role on the PXE-ENABLED DP. DHCP server I'm using is on another physical machine.

Little more information about the environment:

DP1, DP2, DP3 and Primary Server (SCCM) is on a test environment.

DHCP server is in the production environment.

--> But as far as I know this shouldn't give any problems.

I'm planning on asking the network team to add these scope options:

66: 3.3.3.3 (= PXE-ENABLED DP)

67: \reminst\SMSBoot\x64\wdsnbp.com

I'm guessing this'll be the solution? I now got an IP helper to 3.3.3.3 but this clearly isn't working.

Also, any of you guys know a tool that stages a PXE boot? So I can run this on the testPC and use netmon to see what's wrong.

Okay, IP helper is removed. DHCP scope options 66 & 67 are set:

67: \reminst\SMSBoot\x64\wdsnbp.com

I found this tool "dhcptest v0.5" and ran it on my testPC. It gave this output:

Why x86? My testcomputer is a 64 bit.


That does not matter. wdsnbp.com will handle the rest. Use smsboot\x86\wdsnbp.com

DHCP scope options are changed but still get the PXE-E53.

66: 10.---.---.72

67: smsboot\x86\wdsnbp.com

I've used the same tool as before to check the options, and DHCP is giving them correct. The only thing I noticed is that the field sname is empty. (siaddr = option 66 and file = option 67)

See smspxe.log ... you have to fix the "Failed adding image C:\RemoteInstall\SMSImages\P0100106\Bootimage64_1.0.P0100106.wim" first.

I rebooted the DP to do this. The images are now mounted.

But now I don't have a WDS role on it anymore and nothing comes in the log files. Should I manually install WDS again?

I rebooted the DP and did this. The images are now mounted. I tested PXE again, didn't work. I unmounted the images. Tested PXE again, didn't work. It did fix the "Failed adding image C:\RemoteInstall\SMSImages\P0100106\Bootimage64_1.0.P0100106.wim"-problem tho.

I didn't have the WDS role anymore on my DP, so I installed it manually.

Can anyone please help me out?

All that I can find in SMSPXE.log can be found underneath. Nothing gets added when I test PXE boot.

Can anyone please help me out?

All that I can find in SMSPXE.log can be found underneath. Nothing gets added when I test PXE boot.

Nothing gets added when I test PXE boot.


That indicates that the PXE request does not make it to the PXE-enabled DP. That's most likely caused by DHCP options / IPhelper config or network related.
