Error: Access Denied on default.aspx and other pages of existing and new sites
Hi, since today we can't access the project portals of all our projects (Visual Studio TFS 2008/sharepoint admin 3.0 running on esx 4.0). I already checked every possible security settings, they're all OK. I also tried creating a new site but I can't access the site. I can however access all the settings. For example when I try to access: http://server/Sites/Profel I get the "Error: Access Denied" message and the browser is redirected to http://server/Sites/Profel/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=http%3A%2F%2Fserver%2FSites%2FProfel%2Fdefault%2Easpx I have no problem navigating to: http://server/sites/Profel/_layouts/settings.aspx and I can go to al lot of pages, but when I want to create something like a calendar I can specify the parameters but when I click the create button I get the same error. http://server/Sites/Profel/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=http%3A%2F%2Fserver%2FSites%2FProfel%2FLists%2Ftest%2Fcalendar%2Easpx&Type=list&name=%7B46CB3B46%2DD0F6%2D47F5%2DBA1A%2D3C9654A24A8E%7D I already tried this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926642 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861/en-us but no success Any help is welcome, Greetz, Peter

Perhaps a locked webapp? Go to Central admin > Application Management > Site Collection quotas and locks and select your web application. Kindly check the Site Lock Information. By Default it should be “Not Locked” If you are seeing any other radio button selected then change it to “not locked”. Click Ok. Then go to Run and type in IISRESET and then try to browse the site, it should work fine now.Fred Ellis - MSFT - "Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I agree with Fred. If his suggestion does not work, can you let us know if you have installed any updates to the server/OS/SharePoint that coincide with this issue?Chris Caravajal MCTS SharePoint911 Consulting & Support Services

Hi, thanks for your replies. none of the sites are set as locked and there have been no updates on the server/SharePoint. I've changed a site to No access and then back to not locked and then iisreset, but that had no effect. I did see that not all site collections have the same collection owner, could this be a problem? Are there any log files I could have a look at? In the normal eventvwr there is only reoccurring warning: Event Type: Warning Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3 Search Event Category: Gatherer Event ID: 2436 Date: 30/09/2010 Time: 8:43:00 User: N/A Computer: SOV14 Description: The start address <sts3://sov14:17012/contentdbid={f41d7601-9206-4ed3-a326-078ba465b192}> cannot be crawled. Context: Application 'Search index file on the search server', Catalog 'Search' Details: Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content. (0x80041205) Kind regards, Peter

Is that site collection owner still with your organization? Has their user profile been deleted? If you change the Site Collection Admin or add another value (you can do this from Central Administration > Application Management) are the sites accessible? Also, you do have other sites working fine, or is this affecting your whole SharePoint environment?Chris Caravajal MCTS SharePoint911 Consulting & Support Services

Hi, the site collection owner are still active profiles. Changing the site collection admin has no effect. This is affecting every site, existing ones and new ones. For every site only the http://server/sites/site/_layouts/settings.aspx is accessible. But if I for example click the web parts link I get the same access denied error.

What happens if you try to access one of the sites with the System Account? Also, try creating a web application policy and give that user Full Control and see if they can access the site. Did you switch domains?Chris Caravajal MCTS SharePoint911 Consulting & Support Services

Do you mean accessing the site as local\system? I created the web application policy and gave it full control for all zones, and I tried it with both "Account operates as System" checked and unchecked and it didn't work. Also one other thing that changed is that the server went from physical to virtual a couple of weeks ago. But I can't say if it stopped working since then, because the sharepoint environment was setup a while ago (on the physical machine) and then it worked ok, but we only wanted to start using it since last week. So I can't say if something went wrong before or after the p to v. And to answer your last question we didn't switch domains Thanks for all your effort

Hello, Have you checked if there is a webpart that is causing the issue. -Browse the site as http://server/Sites/Profel I/default.aspx?contents=1 -It will open "Web part page Maintenance” page. -Close all web parts and publish the default.aspx page. -Browse the site <http://server/Sites/Profel I/default.aspx with site collection admin account. -if it works then issue would be because of the web part. Thanks , Manas. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, thanks for your answer and sorry for the following question. I went to http://server/Sites/Profel/ default.aspx?contents=1 and closed all the web parts but where do I publish the default.aspx? I haven't got much experience (read none) with managing sharepoint thanks

Hi, Manage Content and Structure isn't available under site actions. I have got design and full control rights.

If you don't see Manage Content and Structure then its not using a Publishing template. Maybe just a Team Site. The physical to virtualization might be where things went wrong. Seems like this will take some digging so you could open a support case with SharePoint to try to help get to the bottom of this. If you don't find the answer you need in the forums, and you'd like additional help, please feel free to visit the link below and see if any paid support option available may suit your needs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;offerprophone In the meantime feel free to continue seeking advice here. It indeed is a team site create by tfs 2008, but I'll have a look at the p to v path. I'll post the solution if I find it.
