ERROR: Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor - SP1 IS applied
Using BI Studio, attempting to put a small VB script in a Script Task, hitting the Edit Script gives: Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Could not load file or assembly 'VSTADTEProvider.Interop, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. I have now also uninstalled VS2008 entirely, along with .NET 3.5 SP1 rebooted several times, reinstalled from the January Team System Database Edition, applied VS2008 SP1 and .Net 3.5 SP1 from Microsoft Downloads with the usual reboots to make sure, and I'm still hosed... After lodging a CASE with MS, the answer is: Uninstall back to pre-SQL Server 2008, and pre-.Net 3.5 (including SP1), and pre-VS2008, rebooting as you go.. Go back to Control Panel ==> Add/Remove Programs AND WHACK THE STUFF THAT THE UNINSTALLS LEAVE BEHIND FROM SS AND VS! Tons of it - rubbish uninstaller!!! Took an hour to get rid of the remnants - stunned! Run a REGISTRY CLEANER! Install SQL Server 2008. Reboot. Install .Net 3.5. Reboot. Install VS 2008 Database Edition (January 2008 version). Reboot. Check for the presence of c:\Windows\assembly\VSTADTEProvider.Interop REPAIR .Net 3.5. Download and install/Repair the .Net 3.5 REDISTRIBUTABLE - VERY IMPORTANT (just talked to Microsoft and that's THEIR advice). Install .Net 3.5 SP1. Reboot. Install VS2008 SP1. Check the assembly above is still there... Reboot! Run BIS 2008 and create a new Project with a Script Task and "Edit Script" - should work... BTW: there is a VS2008 uninstall tool on MSDN site accoring to MSat msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vs2008/bb968856.aspx

Could you specify what REGISTRY CLEANER to use? I have the same problem with VSTA :(

That is the only thing that helped me. I had a slightly different error message though - it could find the dll, but then dll itslef returned a COM error (see below). I also had it installed on a D: drive, now it's on C:. It seems to be a problem with VSTA registration with VisStudio and SSIS editor, and VSTA is apparently a separate application. You can try reinstalling VSTA, or locating that DLL and making sure it's properly set in the registry (good luck with that :) I used .Net framework removal tool, too, to clean stuff. I'm getting a different error that seems to be related to compatibility with 2005 and 2008 since the script was created in 2005. The odd thing is that it runs and I was able to edit it until I re-installed VS2009 and .NET 3.5. I've tried re-installing VS2008 and .NET 3.5 again to no avail! ================================== Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor. Hi All, I managed to sort it out by uninstalling just Microsoft VSTA 2.0 under Add\remove programs and then running a repair on my SQL 2008 installation. No need for all the steps listed above. Regards Chris

I had the same problem. After uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, .NET Framework 3.5 and SP1 several times with different options, the problem was still there. I found out that the source of the problem was a previous installation of Visual Studio 2008 on a different disk. The OS is Vista x64 I solved it by examining the Visual Studio activity using Process Explorer: I found out that visual studio was trying to access several files on the wrong disk. The files referred to were inside D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\ ... My current visual studio folder was C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\... Examining the registry access right above the wrong disk access I found 2 registry keys with several values referring to the wrong disk. Using regedit I saved all the tree of the keys of the registry and did a search of the wrong path and replace with the correct one. The problem was solved. The keys are: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VSTAHost\SSIS_ScriptComponent] and [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VSTAHost\SSIS_ScriptTask\9.0]

Better solution, go tohttp://www.summsoft.com/VSTAInfReq.aspxDownload the VSTA 2.0 SDK and install. This will resolve your issue without reinstalling SQL or VS 2008.Note, I'm posting this here sothat people using google and bing searches might find this answer without wasting a hour like I did.

Uninstalling from Add or Remove Programs and then repairing the SQL Server installlation worked for me too. I had the same error message as above, containing EnsureDTEObject.

I had a Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor error when clicking Edit Script to add a VB2008 script to a script task in BI 2008 too.It was solved by adding another script task to the package and clicking Edit Script to add a C#2008 script. This brought up VS just fine.I closed the VS C# editor...Then when I went back to the previous script task to edit the VB script, it worked... no uninstall, patching, etc. was necessary.

I haven't researched this much as of yet, but I experience this issue - I found that if run VS in administrator mode, then it works fine. >>right click on application icon >>select 'Run as Administrator' assuming you have these permissions...this might help.

I initially tried uninstalling SQLserver 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2008, doing a registry cleanup and then reinstaling. This failed, but I may have missed uninstalling VSTA. Uninstalling that and doing a repair fixed the problem for me too. This would have saved me nearly a day if I'd know to try that first!

I have wasted more than a day to fix this problem. I uninstalled SQL server 2008 , installed VS 2008 SP1 and installed SQL server 2008 again and same issue again. I am highly frustated. Can someone suggest me how to fix this error. THis link http://summsoft.com/VSTAInfReq.aspx doesnt have download option enabled. Please help !!!!! I resolved this problem by going to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and removing Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2.0 (VSTA) and then repairing the 'shared features' of the SQL Server 2008. My version of Microsoft.SqlServer.VSTAScriptingLib.dll is 10 but VSTA is still looking for version 9.0.0.0

My error was Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The VSTA designer failed to load: "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. at VSTADTEProvider.Interop.VSTADTEProviderClass.GetDTE(String bstrHostID, UInt32 dwTimeout) at Microsoft.SqlServer.VSTAHosting.VSTAScriptingEngine.EnsureDTEObject()" (Microsoft.SqlServer.VSTAScriptingLib) I have VS & SQL 2005/8 all installed at different times so this could be the cause of the problem. Thankfully simply launching the reinstall program from the SQL Disc cured the problem (..\Enterprise\x86\Setup\trin_aide.msi). I suppose that you could use the Control Panel to Remove and then re-install. Good luck. Preet
