Doubt regarding capacity limits of WSS with respect to sites
Hi friends, I have some general doubts related to Capacity limits of WSS. Will a site with more than 6000 subsites have performance issue? I am not using a Site List View or Listing of Subsites , i just need to create numerous amount of subsites under a Site. Say, more than 25,000. So will it be an issue in performance?. If yes, what kind of performance issue i will face. Thanks in advance. abinjaik

Hi abinjaik, The maximum of subsites in a site collection (WSS) is 2000. The interface for enumerating subsites of a given Web site will not perform well as the number of susites surpasses 2000. For detail, please see this reference. Plan for software boundaries (Widows SharePoint Services). Best regards, Emir

Just to add to Emir's response. WSS will scale well beyond these numbers if you use site collection strategy better as approaching the tested or hard limits in a single site collection is not a good idea. A better approach would be to use more site collections containing subsites of a similar ilk based on function perhaps, such as HR related subsites in the HR site collection, you could even use site collections rather than subsites as this can scale to 50,000 per web app , but you should always be aware of any rendering issues that may arise if you don't then manage your web apps and the site collections within them.
