Does editing the Master page effect parent sites?

I want to make some simple HTML changes in a subsite such as removing an annoying Home link above a table on the homepage, (not removing it in the top links btw!). I am a bit worried about editing the master page for this subsite because it may effect it's parent site? Is this correct or is the master page separate?

Also is it the Seattle.master I need to edit? (I know the process on how to edit it, make a copy, edit and re-upload.)

Thanks.

Hi,

The master page is separating.

If your sub-site's master page is inheriting from his parent, only when you edit parent's master page, you can change the sub-site's style.

If your sub-site has a special master page, you can edit your sub-site's master page and it doesn't have effect on parent site.

You can activate the publishing feature and specify a master page for the sub site:

  1. Click Site Actions> Site Settings >Manage Site Features.
  2. Activate the publishing feature.
  3. Then return to Site Settings page and click Master Page under Look and Feel.
  4. Special a different master page for the sub site.

Also you can set the Seattle.master as the sub-sites master page, then edit it.

Hi Lisa,

Would that mean I would have to activate Publishing on the parent site - this is not possible as it is not my site to do so.

Hi cardinaluk,

AS I has mentioned, the master page is separating.

So, editing the Master page of the sub-sites doesn't effect parent sites.
