Documents freezes when opening from SharePoint 2007 SP2
Hi When I try to open a .docx file from a SharePoint document library from a client, it first prompts me for a login, and then asks if I want to edit the document or open it as read only. I've tried both options but they both result in Word freezing indefinatly. If I try to open an Excel document I can open it in read only mode, but if I try to switch to edit, the document it will freeze just like Word. I've tried setting the security settings for IE to medium but I'm out of luck. The library has a feature attached to it triggered on ItemAdded and ItemUpdated. But that shouldn't intervene with opening up a document right? (All the feature does is to update an external sharepoint list with data from a database and then copies that data into the document library. Data that later will become available through quickparts in the documents). I've tried the feature on two other SharePoint 2007 installations and it has worked perfectly and with no trouble opening documents. So it seems to be a server setting, but where should I start looking? There's not even anything related in the event viewer so I'm completely stumped. Ideas? Setup I've tried to open the documents from WinXP, Win7 and WS2K8R2 and it's all the same. All computers I've tested are using Office 2007, IE 8 and I'm logging on from a different domain over the internet. The server running the portal is a WS2K3R2 SP2 Standard. Hi Prasanjit, thanks for replying. I could only find the expected in the Office Event Viewer: ID: 0, Application Name: Microsoft Office Word, Application Version: 12.0.6514.5000, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.6425.1000. This session lasted 76 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a hang.Studying system development. I always give credit to helpful posts!

Ok, by any chance do you have McAfee antivirus running on your machine. Delete your Temporary Internet Files, for doing that follow this article: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/921935 and then try opening the document again. Do you still get the problem?BR, PM

McAfee is not running on the client or the server, and I've tried removing all temporary internet files as well. Still no go.Studying system development. I always give credit to helpful posts!

What are the differences in opening a document in read only and edit mode? Cause opening documents in read only mode always works if I open them from within the same domain as the SharePoint server. But when trying to open in edit mode Word still hangs. The document gets as far as identifying how many characters there are (it's in the status bar in the down left corner). And the document also presents a scrollbar. But after that it just freezes. Which extra steps are taken when opening documents in edit mode? And how can they hang the client?Studying system development. I always give credit to helpful posts!

Thanks for your efforts Prasanjit, but while the info behind those links might seem related to my problem, they can't help me in this issue. I'm grateful for your helo though, I'm grabbing every lead I can get on this. If anyone has anything they think can be of help here please post. I'll do the heavy digging in terms of googling if there's anything I can go at, but as of now I don't know where to look. Studying system development. I always give credit to helpful posts!

Do the users have permissions to write to the local Windows drive on the local machine (usually C:\)? I encountered an issue whereby users that were restricted from writing to the C:\ drive by group policy, tried to open Word documents from a document library via Explorer view or UNC path, Word would then hang and you had to kill the process to get it up and running. The only thing we could pin it on was the fact that Word creates a temporary file when opening a document for edit and this temporary file starts with a tilde (~) which is a dissallowed character in SharePoint. Could be unrelated or a red-herring but another potential avenue for you to investigate. We never got it resolved.

I fixed it. If you want to know what I did I can only say I did everything. I recreated everything that I was authorized to recreate. Reinstalled everything that I was authorized to reinstall. Reconfigured everything I was authorized to reconfigure. Maybe I'll try to troubleshoot this later to find the exact cause. Studying system development. I always give credit to helpful posts!
