Document routing without using drop off library

Hi there,

Is there a way to route documents from library to library?

Here's the scenario...

We have many different document libraries, all set up with the same content type. Routing is set up based on a combination of metadata values and this works correctly when routing from drop off libraries.

Ideally, if the metadata changes on a document in a standard (non-drop off) document library, the routing rules should kick in and reroute the document to the appropriate library.

Question:

1. Is this possible out of the box?

2. Do routing rules only get triggered when the document is in a drop off library?

3. if so, can I convert a "normal" document library to a drop off library? If so, how? (what's the difference between the two?)

Many thanks for any assistance

Hi Pinnidgi,

From your description, you want to route documents between normal document libraries.

First, go to Site settings > Content organizer settings> enable the option Require users to use the organizer (Please read the explanation on the left of the option):

The explanation means if you want to use a normal library as a drop off one, you need to add at least one content organizer rule pointing to it.

To do it, go to Content organizer rules> add rules to the target library (make sure the target library contains the content type you want to route).

After doing these, documents can be route between normal libraries not necessarily from drop off library.

Thanks Aaren, I just realised that the routing does actually work if the file is created in the library - it routes to the correct library - however the issue is (now more refined) that if the document already exists in the normal library and we change the metadata it doesn't reroute. I have set up the Content Organizer Processing timer job to run every few minutes (and tested with a run now) but it doesn't reroute. Any suggestions? Thanks again
