In an office 365 sharepoint site i have enabled open in client applicartion for document library but it is not working for image/txt/pdf files for word and excel files it is working fine. I have even turned on the feature open document in client application by default from site collection features also but there is no change.

Hi Chaitanya, what happens when you open the other files, do they open in the browser? There really isn't a designated "client application" for those types of files.

Hi cameron,

If it is txt,img or pdf it is getting opened in browser it self. If it is excel or word document it is getting downloaded into the PC.

Hi Chaitanya,

According to your description, my understanding is that the non-MS office files cannot be opened in client application in office 365.

It is by design that the txt files and image files will be opened in browser directly or PDF files will be promoted to be downloaded to the PC.

The Open in client application is used to affect the Office files.

However, you can now open PDF files directly in Adobe Reader and the PDF file will remain connected to SharePoint Online.

Dear Victoria Xia,

What should we do if we want to open non-office files in PC. Any HTML/Code changes required? even the link you have given me regarding PDF is describing about settings of IE but i need it to be opened in PC, when ever I click on the file in any of the  browsers like chrome/firefox/IE.

Please advice.

Regards,

Chaitanya.

Pls check the following

1. Check whether the respective file extensions are already added to the adminstration

2. Change the value of "Browser  file handling" from strict to permissive in general settings of web application
