Document Library Search Box not appearing

I am using Document Library to manage and store our process documents. I can upload documents and set properties etc. fine, however the search box does not appear on the Document Library in any view. I have ticked the "Display Search Box" option in the Document Library Web Part properties, to no avail. I know the Search Service is working correctly as I can use a Search Results Web Part to search my site, however I would prefer to use the Document Library's built-in search as this displays the results in the Document Library view.

I have seen some websites that show that the Document Library should have a search box near the new document link. (I can't link them as my account isn't verified yet, searching "sharepoint 2013 document library search" should find them)

I am using Sharepoint 2013 Foundation - is the Document Library built-in search box only available in the paid versions?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi Owen,

Based on my understanding, that is not available in SharePoint foundation, as the search box in library should use filter search in SharePoint, which is not available in SharePoint foundation.

If I have any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

Hi,
I have the same problem (on SP Server) but with custom lists.
When i click on "Display search box" in the properties, it shows the search box while i am editing the page.
Once I save the page, the search box is gone..

I have SharePoint Enterprise. I add the document library web part to a content page and then edit its properties to display the search box. click Okay button and it still shows. Yet, when I go to save the page it disappears.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

I have the same problem on my environment. Is this a known issue?

Ya'll try creating a new view on the library using the built in "Standard View" link. Save the view, then add the web part. Once added pick this new view  on the web part properties and apply then save the page, see if that will work.

The Search box is only available for lists and libraries that are displayed as client-side rendered views. Although the default behavior is to display the Search box, the Search Box can be hidden by the List View Web Part property, Search Box, in the Miscellaneous section of the tool pane.

(refers to https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Manage-lists-and-libraries-with-many-items-b8588dae-9387-48c2-9248-c24122f07c59?CorrelationId=f6c31d05-3a25-4124-8fb0-f39063defe3d&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US#__toc330996262)

And another tricks:

  • When creating views and you want to display the Search Box, stick with the Default Style for your view
  • Or if you have a library you have migrated into SharePoint 2013 that was using anything but Default, put it back and you will be good to go

PS:  that it is not available in Foundation edition as it depends on "Filter Search" feature in Enterprise.
