Document Library: How to Create Rich Text Column
In WSS, how do I create a column with Rich Text option for Multiple Lines of Text, for Document Library? If I create Custom List (or Announcement, etc), the option is available. But not sure why, I cannot find that option in document library column. I also try create new Content Type, and create Rich Text column for that content type. However, when I use this content type for the Document Library, it's still displayed with Textarea only (no formatting). How do I create Rich Text column for Document Library?

Hi, For this you need to create your own custom field for document library. Please see this link http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb417414.aspxit explains how to create and deploy coustom field. You canuseSPFieldMultiLineText to create the multiline field.

Hmm.. It seems to be a complicated solution. This type is all available in the List, and any reason why it's not available for Document Library. Thank you for the idea, I will try to look around for any available solution, but if anyone has a simpler workaround, please post it here. Thank you.

I am not sure what I did, but suddenly the Site Column that I have configured as Rich Textbox, can be displayed in one of the Document Library's form as Rich Textbox. But, it only applies to one Document Library. I create another Document Library and use the same Content Type, but the same site column is still displayed as a regular TextArea (no formatting). Waah, now it becomes more mess than before, my customer/user has already seen the Rich Textbox in one of the Document Library, so their expectation has been set. . Any Idea??

I have figured it out. If you want to use Rich Textbox in Document Library, first configure in Advance Setting, to use Content Type. In that Content Type, create new Site Column that configure as Multiline with Rich Textbox. After all has been setup properly, save this site as Template. Then, create a new Document Library using the Template that has been saved before. Aloha, now the column is displayed as Rich Textbox. It's weird, and not sure if it will or has been fixed by Microsoft. I already install SP1. Any comment?

Hi Gunady, first thanks for the post. I had the Rich Text Column working in a prototype site I created for a client, but couldn't for the life of me get it working when I created a new Document Library. I didn't realize that I had created the prototype library using a template I had saved earlier. I lost an hour comparing every setting, site column and content type between the prototype and the new library. I was about to have another "why the hell did I become developer" moment when your post came to the rescue. Anyway, checking the release notes for SP1 doesn't show any sign of this issue being fixed. I will be installing SP1 later this week and will post an update if anything new comes up. Cheers,

I am currently on SP2 for WSS v3.0 and still experiencing this. However, I think I have figured out a way to workaround the issue of not be able to use Rich Textbox in Document Libraries which I believe might be a bug in SharePoint. If you create the site column and add it to a content type from the Site Content Type Gallery page and later on add that content type to a Document Library, the column will not be displayed as a Rich Textbox. However if you add the content type to the Document Library first without having the site column firstly added to it, and then later on add the site column to the content type from within the Document Library > Settings > "Content Types" > "Add from existing site or list columns", then it would work and the column will be displayed as Rich Textbox when you add / edit a document in the Document Library. It is strange, but I hope Microsoft would fix it soon.

I could achieve this through SP Designer 2010. Go to library, Edit columns, double click the column which you want enable Rich Text functionality, select the checkbox which says Rich Text and hit OK and then SAVE. You will see the text area is having Rich Text functionality. Thanks.
