I have Windows 8.1 home on my laptop. I am currently dual booting with Windows 10 Pro on a partition. I heard that the Preview automatically upgrades to a fully licensed version on July 29. I have also reserved a copy on Windows 8.1. If I get rid of the partition and upgrade Windows 8.1 to the Preview now, do I get the Pro version for free on July 29?

Also, if I upgrade to the preview from Windows 8.1, do all of my programs stay?

RE : upgrade path

The upgrade path is ..... like for like.

Home for Home, Pro for pro.

32-bit for 32-bit, 64-bit for 64-bit

RE : Also, if I upgrade to the preview from Windows 8.1, do all of my programs stay?

If it is an upgrade install, yes, you get to keep your files, settings and applications.
If it is a clean install, no, everything will be erased.

Hi,

My laptop is like yours, dual-boot of Window 8.1 Pro and Windows 10 Pro(build 10130). And I've created an partiton image of Windows 8.1.
1) I'm expecting/believing that Windows 8.1 will be upgraded to Windows 10 RTM free of charge.
[note] W10 Preview will be still W10 Preview after July 29.
2) I think God only knows whether no problem/trouble will occurs by upgrading from W8.1 to W10 RTM.
Therefore, I've created an image of W8.1.

Best regards,

If your operating system is genuine you get windows 10 update as soon, for 1 year you can use it after that you have to pay for it and also windows 10 is also available for pirate users with a watermark on desktop shows it's not genuine.

I have found this news on Internet, any how we can wait the release.

June 20th, 2015 7:27am

I know for non-Insiders, that is the case, but I have found numerous articles (such as http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/06/heres-how-to-get-windows-10-for-free-even-if-you-dont-have-windows-7-or-8/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arstechnica%2Findex+%28Ars+Technica+-+All+content%29) online that says that Windows 10 Insider Preview will automatically be upgraded to RTM. And I have the Pro version of the Preview.

Also, my version of 8.1 is genuine.

When the Preview is upgraded to RTM, is it the Home or Pro version? I have the Pro version of the Preview.
June 20th, 2015 8:48pm

from on 29 July.  Home/Pro depends on W10 Preview (for it's via Windows Update)
Please read articles.

What exactly do you mean? If I install the Pro version of the Preview on 8.1 Home, do I receive the Pro version of RTM on July 29, thus essentially giving me a free upgrade from Home to Pro?

There are still areas that are open for interpretation.

My understanding is, and I do not claim to be an expert........

Although your Win 10 TP is a Pro version, you qualifying OS is a Home version. Therefore you will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home.

We have about 40 days to find out for real. Why not just sit back and wait for real answer on July 29th ?

As far as I know, the upgrade from the Preview to RTM doesn't base anything off your previous OS. It only matters if you're upgrading from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 directly to RTM.

Your interpretation is fine by me. We shall know by July 29th.

Let's not relegate this meaningful, genuine thread into one of those long-winded, self-promoting, waste of time " chat room " varieties.

Let's make a deal.
We'll come back to this thread after July 29th and congratulate the one who has the correct interpretation.
Shall we ?

Another idea is to wait until July 29th when the Preview is upgraded to RTM, and if it is indeed a fully licensed version of Windows 10 Pro, then I can take note of the product key, uninstall/deactivate it, and plug it in to my Windows 8.1 Home installation to get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Either that, or I wait to plug in the Windows 10 Pro activation key until my Windows 8.1 Home is automatically upgraded to Windows 10 Home. Is this a good idea?

If you take it upon yourself to attempt to circumvent the original Windows 10 license agreement, don't be surprised if the original product key becomes "blocked".  Words to the wise...

Hi lanRandman,
I'm poor at English. So, if I misunderstand what you meant, forgive me.

Your laptop is dual-boot, Windows 8.1 Home and Windows 10 Pro Preview(Build ?). If you would upgrade both W8.1 Home and W10 Pro Preview, W8.1 Home would turn to W10 Home RTM and W10 Pro Preview to W10 Pro RTM . (both genuine license) (should be required to login via Microsoft Account)
I suppose you have an option to upgrade only one of the two.

That's what I am not sure about. I don't know if Windows 10 Preview will be upgraded to the pro version. If so, I would like to take that license to get a pro version of windows on my primary partition.

Ok. In the case that I do get the Pro version from the Preview, how would I deactivate it and use that license to get Windows 10 Pro on my primary partition with Window 8.1 Home currently installed?

June 21st, 2015 1:15am

I don't know how to deactivate. If you don't want to use W10 RTM, it's better not to upgrade, isn't it?
This thread is "Do I get Windows 10 Professional for free?". Now the topic has gone far, I think.

I want Windows 10 RTM, but I would like the Pro version, not the Home version that I am going to get from my upgrade from Windows 8.1 Home. My question still essentially, "Am I getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro?".
June 21st, 2015 1:29am

No.  You will not get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro if your PC is running the Home version.

Since Microsoft has yet to publish the terms and conditions of the final license, no one can speculate correctly what will be permitted with the free, final version of Windows 10.
