Distribution Points and Restructuring
What happens with the defined distributions points in case a new central server is configured? We have migrated all Servers to SCCM 2007. We started with the central server and did an inplace upgrade. Alle packages, Collections and distribution points are defined via the central server. We installed a new W2k8 server as a new child to ensure all packages and custom collections are replicated to the new server. This server will be the new central server and replace the old one. The question is are defined distributions points on the old central replicated back to the new central after we restructure the hierachy or do we need to redefine the distribution points. Thanks

If I understand correctly you are going to take the current central site out of the hierarchy? If so those DP's will go with it. You need to recreate them. John Marcum | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum |

Hi, All "old" packages will remain and can be used as long as you don't refresh the distribution point. The "old" DP's will not be recreated when you configure the new central site.Kent Agerlund | http://scug.dk/members/Agerlund/default.aspx | The Danish community for System Center products

Thanks for your thoughts. That was also my expectations. I will test what happens in case the distribution point is recreated on the central site in the case the same disribution points already exits on the downstream primary server.

Hi Kent yesterday I found some time to do a lab test regarding my thread question. 1) I created a package on the old central server (let's call it OLD-CENTRAL) and the package was distributed to two downstream primary server (P1 and NEW-CENTRAL). 2) Only one downstream server (P1) was configured as a distribution point because the other (NEW-CENTRAL) will become the new central server. P1 received the package and distribution point information is in place. NEW-CENTRAL got the package information and as expected the distribution point P1 is not listed on the NEW-CENTRAL server. 3) After restructuring the hierachy, NEW-CENTRAL is now the new central server and P1 and OLD-CENTRAL are the downstream server the distribution point is know at P1 but on the NEW-CENTRAL the information is missing. One additional observation is that the package on server P1 is not locked anymore. 4) I added the new/old distribution point for the package on the NEW-CENTRAL server. What I saw was that the NEW-CENTRAL server created a new package for distribution, also the sender log entries which indicated that the package was resent. A new package file arrived at P1 and is extracted again. The positive result was that the package at server P1 is now locked Conclusion: Recreating the package distribution points on a new central server after restructuring the hierachy (in my case replace the central server) will lead into recreation of all package distribution points + all packages are resent and is necessary to get the packages locked on any downstream server.
