Discovery Wizard/Task Windows Never Complete
I'm in the process of migrating SCE 2007 to a new production server build (Win2k3 SP2 x32). Previously I've been running on a PCwith Win2k3 x32 using local SQL Express for the Backend. The new server has a full SQL 2005 license installed locally. Thedeployment went smoothly, firstly SQL & reporting services wereinstalled then upgraded to SP2. The SCE RTM install went without a hitch, the dependencies were metfirst time and there were no errors. All good so far! Now to the task of deploying the agents. The first agent deployed fine, the machine was then left overnight while the GPOs updated. For some reason I can now no longer deploy any agentsor run tasksl. I've tried automatic or advanced discovery, howeverit just sits on the discovery in progress screen forever... The ops manager log shows that verification is succesful and I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps for agent deployment - they all pass. I believe it's a problem with the SCE console itself, this is supported by the fact that running any task such as display network connections results in the task window staying on the screen forever. However, if I go to the Monitoring tab and select task status, all the tasks and discoveries are shown as succesful! I don't believe it's a performance issue, the server is a Dell 2950 with quad core Xeon x32, 4Gb RAM & 6 * SCSI disks. This system is supposed to be in production so I'm under a bit of pressure to get it working again. Any help would be appreciated! Regards, Toby Heaford

Toby, Have you tried using a remote UI install to run the agent deployment? This would determine of the console on the server was in fact hanging.

Are you using default domain discovery or a targetted discovery. Sometimes the domain discovery takes long time especially if you have a domain that has lot of computers. You need to look at the eventlog and see if there are any issues discovering the computers. The other thing you can do is trace discovery, it will have more information. -Thank you, Appireddy.

Thanks for the suggestions. Appridy, it's either a domain discovery or targetted - does the same thing. I've even left the dialog box open overnight on a tartgetted discovery, it never completes. As far as the event log is concerened, shortly after I do a targetted discovery, there's a 11553 entry showing Verification Successes = 1, so it looks okay. How do I do a trace discovery? As I mentioned, I get a similar result when running a task. No other errors in the logs. Tim, good suggestion hadn't tried that. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference, sitsdiscovering forever even on a remote client... The strange thing is that I had this product working on a test server previously. In a bid to reduce any problems, I uninstalled the agents, then SCEfrom the exisiting server and built the production server fresh (no database migration etc). Other than hardware config, the only difference between the two servers is that the old one was using SQL express. The new build we are using SQL 2005 with SP2. Are there any known issues with SCE running on SQL 2005 SP2? Regards, Toby

I've seen these same symptoms happen when the SQL Service Broker is disabled. To check this, run the following query in SQL Management Studio: SELECT is_broker_enabled FROM sys.databasesWHERE name = 'OperationsManager' If this returns "0", then it is not enabled. Run the following qeury to enable it: ALTER DATABASE OperationsManager SET ENABLE_BROKER

Hi Jimmy, thanks for the suggestion but it looks like the broker is enabled. Regards,Toby

Hi Jim, According to your description, I suspend the problem is caused by credential issue, please check the following steps: 1. Check whether the OpsMgr Config Service, OpsMgr Health Service, OpsMgr SDK Service is running well under local system account. Reset those services, then try again. 2. Check your SCE Administration panel->Security->Run As Accounts, in the right, Type: Action Accounts, check whether the account is domain admin. 3. Check whether you have changed domain administrators password. If yes, please change it back then try again. 4. Let's perform a Clean Boot. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer. 1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE. (MSCONFIG is a built-in tool for Windows XP\2003 systems.) 2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click "Disable All". 3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during start-up.) 4) Restart the computer. Does the problem still persist? If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Hope it helps.-----------------------------Sincerely,Guozhen WangMicrosoft Online Community Support

Hi Guozhen, 1. The OpsMgr services are running as local system and appear to start and run cleanly. 2. The SCE admin account is a domain admin, I've checked the credenitals as suggested and it's not locked out. 3.The domain admin password hasn't changed. 4. A clean boot didn't solve the problem unfortunately. A bit more info, it appears to be related to all status windows. As I mentioned in the first post, in addition to the discovery wizard not fininishing, if I run a task the window never shows the task completing. However if I go to the Monitoring tab and select task status, the task shows succesfult. Indeed I can see the output in the details pane. Regards, Toby Heaford

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I decided to bite the bullet and carry out an uninstall/reinstall. This has solved the problem but I have no idea why it happened in the first place? Hopefully it won't occur again... Regards, Toby

Hi Toby, According to your description, I think the problem may be caused by temporarily network issue, or something unexpected happened during the first installation. And I am happy to know you have resolved the issue, hope you have a nice trip with SCE. -----------------------------Sincerely,Guozhen WangMicrosoft Online Community Support

Hi All,This problem I too faced offlate. This problem is quite common in SCOM 2007 SP1. The same problem happpens while running tasks from Operations Manager Console to a targetted computer and output is unable to be seen or while during recalculating health from health explorer. Is this a common bug? Is anybody aware whether this problem is taken care in SCOM 2007 R2?Thanks.DABDAB
