Difference between Delta Threshold and Consecutive Sample threshold Monitor?
All, I would like to monitor few performance counters and want that as an email notifications if it exceeds the below mentioned values. Scenario1: I want to monitor "% Disk Time" counter which does not exceed 95% for any period of two hours or more. Scenario2: I want to monitor "Pages Input/Sec" counter which does not exceed 5/sec for any period of two hours or more. Which monitor will be useful to achieve my requirement? I could see Delta Threshold and Consecutive Sample Threshold. May I know the difference of both and which will suit my requirement.Regards, Suresh

Delta Threshold - change in value from one sample to the next. Delta = difference. Consecutive Sample Threshold - over threshold for x consecutive samples. Neither do what you are looking for. The closest would be consecutive samples. E.g. You could sample every 10 minutes and alert for consecutive samples of 12 (12 x 10 = 120 minutes = 2 hours). But this only takes \ samples the value every 10 minutes so the the value could fall below threshold during each 10 minute period. Graham, Thanks for the Info!!! I would prefer going for Consecutive Sample threshold. One more question pls. 1. If any one of my sample goes beyond 95%, do I get an alert (OR) 2. If all 12 samples should go beyond 95% to trigger an alert? If my First option works, do samples restart from 1 to 12 after triggering an alert? Can you clarify this pls?Regards, Suresh

consecutive sample threshold means alert will generate for consecutive sample e.g. consecutive sample : 3 threshold: 95% scenario 1 sample 1: 96% sample 2: 98% sample 3: 90% result: no alert scenario 2 sample 1: 96% sample 2: 98% sample 3: 97% result: generate alert Roger

Hi It would be option 2. If all 12 consecutive samples should go beyond 95% then an alert would be triggered. Cheers GrahamRegards Graham New System Center 2012 Blog! - http://www.systemcentersolutions.co.uk View OpsMgr tips and tricks at http://systemcentersolutions.wordpress.com/

Roger/Graham, I have created a Consecutive Sample Threshold monitor and set Threshold = greater than 30 Samples = 2 Interval = 15 mins Health State [If Condition True, then Critical else Healthy] But I could see the alerts triggering every 15 mins. As per the settings above, I should have an alert at every 30 mins if the problem exists. Am I right??? Also alerts reaching console as coming as "Closed" though the alert age is <1 min. Can you please shed some light. Also I could the Alert Description as below. I am not able to see the value it exceeded. Regards, Suresh

Age just means how long ago the alert was generated compared to current time in the console. The value, according to the details for % Disk Time is 4. Are these closed alerts all for the same Disk instance and Hosting Computer? Because if you set the monitor up correctly, then the agent should take two samples at 15 minute intervals and compare them to the threshold. If > the threshold it should raise an alert.Regards, Blake Email: mengotto<at>hotmail.com Blog: http://discussitnow.wordpress.com/

Blake, You are correct, Age refers that when the alert reaches the console. But still why it is reaching the console at every 15 mins interval if the sample is set as 2 and the interval is set as 15 mins. Hope you understand my concern. Also "Has a Value 4" is not the exact value. If an alert is coming for 3rd time, it is showing as Value 4. PFB screenshot for the same. Also please be noted that my Threshold is set as 30. So the value should be >30 in description. Regards, Suresh

Where did you store this monitor? I would like to see the xml for the configuration. Can you provide that to us? Or screenshots of the monitor configuration?Regards, Blake Email: mengotto<at>hotmail.com Blog: http://discussitnow.wordpress.com/

make sure that monitor condition is set correctly. This means that condition true( > 30) is unhealth health state. Moreover, do not close the alert manually. If you manually close the alert, it will generate at next 15 minutes unless % disk time is under health condition. Roger

Blake/Roger, I have pasted the settings screenshot below. Pls verify if this is correct and let me know why I am getting alert every 15 mins if it is set as 15 min interval and with 2 samples. So, (15*2=30 mins) should be the alerting right??? I am not clsoing the alert at all. It is just coming in Closed state only. Regards, Suresh

Hi Be careful with monitors for multi-instance objects - do you also have a d:\ drive (or another physical drive that is health): http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/11/24/writing-monitors-to-target-logical-or-physical-disks.aspx " if an agent has MULTIPLE instances of logical disks, C:, D:, E:, AND those disks have different threshold results the monitor will flip-flop as it examines each instance of the counter. For example, if C: is running out of space, but D: is not the workflow will examine C:, turn red, generate an alert, then immediately examine D:, and turn back to green, closing the alert. I see all the instances, and I see from your later posts the screenshots. What I am not seeing is the host (path) in the above. Are all of those alerts from the SAME host machine and same instance?Regards, Blake Email: mengotto<at>hotmail.com Blog: http://discussitnow.wordpress.com/
