Design Question

Hi,

I need to setup SCCM for a client and I want to clarify a couple of design issues.  Any help appreciated.

They have arpound a twelve hundred client machines across multiple couintries.  I'm initiialy putting in an SCCM server for the UK only and adding two more later. The UK only has around 600 hundred client machines.  I'm planning on putting in on Server in the uk as a primary site with all the roles on it.  And later adding two more servers as primary sites.  I don't intend to make them child sites.

Is there any issues with this and what are the drawbacks of not mmaking them child sites?

I'm having trouble finding any decent design documents,  Any pointers on where to find some?

Thanks.

(1) What's the reason for adding 2 primary (!) (child) sites?
(2) Why not making them child sites?

eerrrmm.  Well I'm trying to keep the international traffic to a minimal as some of the links are not great.  But If I being stupid then I'll make them child sites.

Whats the advantage of child site?  Reporting?

You have to setup ConfigMgr for a client and don't even know the basics of the product? Here's something to start (!) with http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693570.aspx.

Hi,

Youl will benefit a lot by adding them as child sites. This gives you the option to create a central structure of collections, packages etc. Those objects will all be downloaded to the child sites where they can be used. At the child sites all inventory data and status messages will be send to the central site. This leaves you with a great inventory overview from the central locatoin in UK.

You can control the bandwidth between the sites. So you don't have to worry about configmgr floading the lines between the 3 sites. Also if you "only" have a few 100 clients at the other location you could consider secondary sites. They are easier to work with and don't require a license or a SQL server.
