Deploying to older machines without pre-staging.
Hi there, We have some older PC's located at our site which do not support PXE booting and also lack the required GUID to allow us to pre-stage them. Under these circumstances is there any way to use a Task Sequence to deploy an OS to these machines? Of course the PXE boot issue is not a show-stopper as we can create Task Sequence Media on either USB or CD - but at the moment we are not able to prestage the clients and thus we cannot advertise the required Task Sequences to these machines. Is there a way to handle this circumstance with SCCM? Kr pete

There's no need for the GUID. The MAC address is sufficient.

Hello, Many thanks for the reply - I will try doing a deployment with only the MAC Address and see how I get on. On a side note I have tried using the unknown computer support option but have not had much luck. The bootable media boots fine but once the GUI component has loaded it simply says that it could not locate any valid tasks for this computer - this led me to think that the machines HAD to be pre-staged to work. If you can give any pointers as to why this might be then i'd be grateful. Kr Pete

Many thanks to both Torsten and Kent for their help. I think that in our environment it is more likely that we will go with the pre-staging option - i've now tested using just the MAC Address and it works perfectly. I can only assume that the facility of using a GUID is provided for security reasons as the MAC is not a 'fixed' value and potentially if we use MAC only then there is some scope for this to be abused (although less so than using unknown computer support). I have now managed to advertise an OSD Task Sequence to a number of clients and have this sequence start when booting via USB media. My next challenge is to replicate this functioanality using PXE-boot). There will no doubt be more questions relating to this but i'll post seperately regarding these.
