Deploying lync2013 external without edge

Hi,

We're about to deploy Lync2013 and use it for external access. Can anyone help me whether is it possible for public user to use Lync without implementing edge server ? If yes, do anyone know what port should i open in order for external user to connect to our FE pool server? I do have reverse proxy and firewall in front of our FE server.thx

I guess it would be possible if unsupported. You'd likely have to have your domain using your FQDN and not an internal domain. Exposed...your lync server would have to have real IP addressing...no I can't in good faith recommend this, even if the config is slightly possible.

Please use an edge server, not trying to be a jerk.

Not tested, not supported, period!

To "make it work" and then to "make it work right" are two different things. Assuming you get it to work (yes, it is possible if you treat Internet as you LAN), the next step you will want to support is Mobility. Oh, wait, you need Edge for that. Then, Federation - Edge. Integration with Skype Consumer - Edge.

The time you will spend to "make it work" will be longer than deploying edge in your environment. Yeah, I've heard before "I don't have IP's, I don't have money for certificates"... In this case, Lync/S4B is not for you!

I am sorry for the harsh language, but it is time to make a point, i guess...

As Drago wrote, you will lost a lot of features and you have to open a lot of ports to your internal network.

To setup a Lync edge server, you need only one additional machine and you will have more features like public federation, federation with other comapnies etc.

Hey Developer,

I feel bad yelling at you yesterday. If this is a lab and you plan to use it as a proof of concept, I can help you run it all with one IP (if you promise to deploy edge :-).

What say you?

Hi,

It is not supported to plan external access without Edge Server. You have to deploy an Edge Server in DMZ zone.

Here is the requirement for Lync external access:

Hi Drago,

Yeah.sound great. Anyway this lync is for our demo purposes for our top management. We're in the midst of process introducing lync to our company but we need to get approval first. so for starting, we just introduce text messaging while audio/video will be disable due to bandwith/network which will be upgrade later. hope, i explained well my intention without using edge first. :-)
