Deploying WIM os image using boot CD
Hi, I have a wim OS image that was captured using SCCM capture media CD. I need to find a way of deploying this wim image using either bootable USB or CD/DVD only. Is this possible? Thanks.

You can create a bootable media for DVD or USB by right-clicking the task sequence and select create task sequence media. / Johan

To expand on Johan's answer, there are two types of task sequence media available: bootable and stand-alone. If you truly want to create a deployment experience that runs from media without connecting to the ConfigMgr site, then stand-alone is the way to go. This type of TS media contains a copy of everything in your TS and runs, as its name implies, stand-alone. You must of course first have a working deployment task sequence also.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

How to Create Task Sequence Bootable Media In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System Center Configuration Manager / Site Database / Computer Management/ Operating System Deployment / Task Sequences. To launch the Task Sequence Media wizard, select the Actions menu and then select Create Task Sequence Media. Alternatively, you can click Create Task Sequence Media in the Actions pane. On the Select Media Type page, select Bootable Media and click Next. On the Media Type page specify the type of media you want to use with the cooperating system deployment. You can specify CD, DVD, or a USB flash drive as the type of media. Specify the name of the media file that you are creating on the Media file line. The media file is where Configuration Manager 2007 will save the files to. If multiple pieces of media are required Configuration Manager 2007 will add a sequence number to each piece of required media. If you are using USB media, specify the Drive letter that should be used to save the files using the drop down. Note If you are initiating a task sequence using USB media you must leave the USB media attached until you have successfully started the full operating system. On the Security page, you can specify a password to protect the media or require that the media request a self signed certificate. You can import an existing certificate by selecting Import Certificate and clicking the Browse button to locate the certificate you want to use. You should always assign a password or request a certificate to protect the bootable media and your Configuration Manager 2007 site. Specify the boot image that will run from the boot media on the Boot Image page. The media you specify will be used to boot the new computer, therefore the boot image specified must be of the appropriate architecture (x86, x64) and include the appropriate device drivers for the target computer. To view distribution points from child sites, select the Show distribution points from child sites check box. On the Confirmation page you can view the summary and click Finish to complete the wizard.

I've just gone through and created stand-alone media but when I try to boot of the USB flash drive, the PC doesn't boot off it at all. I can see all the files in the USB fine. I can't create bootable media because I won't have access to SCCM server and net work. I need to load the OS to the PC offline. Is there anything I can troubleshoot?

Did you set Boot Device order in BIOS? It sounds like a boot order issue.

You can't just copy the ISO to a USB device and have it boot, it doesn't work that way. To create the bootable USB drive, install the console on your workstation; this will allow it to copy the files to a locally connected USB drive.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Yes I did that in the BIOS. I even booted to USB device manually in the boot menu. I'm not too sure what's wrong here. At first I used a 4gig USB flash drive to create the bootable media but SCCM reported the disk was too small. So now I'm using a 16gig USB flash drive. Not sure if there are any issues with the size or file system as I've never used a 16gig USB flash drive as a boot disk before. Is there any other method to deploy a WIM that was captured by SCCM offline?

I've outlined how to create bootable USB media here - http://blog.danovich.com.au/2011/08/01/sccm-unattended-osd-with-bootable-usb-drive/
