Deploy image using bootable media
Using SCCM 2007 SP2. I was able to create a XP SP3 image and task sequence and was able to deploy the image using standalone media. It worked fine. Now, I want to deploy it using bootable media (will use PXE later). I have done following and it was working. 1. advertised the task sequence to a collection "new build for XP" 2. got the MAC address from the PC I want to deploy 3. import the computer using its MAC address and given name "newbuild" from Computer Association and assigned to the collection "new build for XP" 4. created the bootable media from the task sequence 5. deploy the image without error. Now, here are my questions 1. How can I know which collection a TS has been advertised to? 2. after imported the computer information I couldn't find it anywhere under Coumputer association or the collection. So I coldn't I know which computer(s) has been imported? 3. how can I deply the image (baremetal image to new or existing PC) without importing computer information? I'd like to just run the bootable CD from the PC? 4. Once the image was done I found it was created with the computer name I set during importing? Is that correct? I have TS to prompt computer name and it worked fine when using stnadalone media. I expected it will prompt me but it used hte name specified during importing computer information. 5. I will have several images later. I'd like to create a bootable media which will list all TS options for you to choose. But now look like when creating a bootable media from a TS it will only target that TS. Please advice. Thanks.

Hello - 1.Checkout TS advertisment so that you can findout the collection details. 2. Do you remember which is collection if yes you can find the computer details in collection?Go through below link to get more details on this? http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/518-how-can-i-deploy-windows-vista-sp1-using-sccm-2007-sp1/ I think, most of your queries are generic. I would suggest you to go through excellent documentation given in the below blog? http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/511-how-can-i-deploy-windows-vista-sp1-using-sccm-2007-sp1/Anoop C Nair

1. As Anoop said. TS adverts appear under Software Dist->Adverts just like normal soft dist adverts. 2. Did you refresh the collection and the associaionts nodes? Sometimes the MMC doesn't do a very good good of this on its own. 3. Unknown Computer support was added in R2 (R3 also include R2). This creates two unknown computer resources (x86 and x64) in ConfigMgr that you can advertise TSes to and ConfigMgr will treat any systems unknown to it as one of these resources for the purposes of TS assignment. 4. In general yes. How did you configure the TS to prompt you for a name? 5. Why will you have several images? One of the best parts of OSD is the fact that it is hardware agnostic and that you can dynamically add things to the target system after the deployment of the image but still during the OSD process. Having multiple images is generally a bad thing. There are reasons that you must have mutiple images like OS edition though. Bootable media is not specific to any TS. Do not make your your TS advertisements mandatory; this will cause a menu to be displayed during bare metal deployment listing all assigned TSes and allow you to choose which one you want.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/jsandys/default.aspx | Twitter @JasonSandys

Thanks for your advice. Using the collection Unknown computer I was able to get what I want. Now, here is another problem. I can't re-image a machine which is already in SCCM. I had to delete it from the All XP System collection first. How to get around this restriction? We usually clean obsolete machines once a while. We want to let helpdesk to image machines but no access to SCCM collections. BTW. I made a wrong statement. We have several TS but one image.
