Deploy XP WIM Image with SCCM
Hi I have been searching for a while now for this problem but no luck. I have a ghost image of windows XP SP3 with lots of programs and it is syspreped to work on 15 laptops and another to work on 10 workstations. I made an image with ImageX "wim image" but i couldnt deploy it with SCCM as it fails at the start. So the questions is " how to deploy this image using SCCM". I already read every manual on creating and capturing xp image with sccm but thats not what i want. greatest regards to all and hope to get a solution here soon.

Deploy it via Ghost to a system. Boot the system in WinPE, capture using ImageX. You can use a standard PE boot image from the WAIK and access ImageX from a network location.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

sooner or later you'll have to break away from the idea that ghosting one image to work with 15 laptops and 10 workstations is your solution and learn the correct procedures for deploying windows XP with SCCM, the correct way (sorry but i will tell you) is to first create a build and capture task sequence to make your Gold or Master image, typically (and it's best practise) create this image on virtual machines (hyperV or vmware or whatever takes your fancy) to keep the image driver free, you should also keep this image off the domain (keep it workgroup joined) and save your customizations for the next stage of the process, the Deploy Task Sequence. The Deploy task sequence deploys your Windows XP captured wim image to many many different types of hardware using wmi queries to detect hardware and thus load the correct drivers for those devices, any problems you are experiencing with your deploy task sequence are more than likely the result of the way you created the image in the first place, so take a big breath and start afresh so that you can develop a process for doing things right the first time, back to your current issue, you could create a new task sequence, add the captured wim via the Add Operating system image section in the Operating System Deployment node of configmgr, once added, add that image to some distribution points, and then reference that captured image in your task sequence by using an Apply Operating System step which references a captured image (and not an install operating system image) if you are having issues with this such as bluescreens then look into changing the HAL via a script such as michaels excellent example, otherwise, let us know the errors you are seeing and look into what the SMSTS.log file says hope that helps cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Hi, after deploy it via Ghost to a system, it's also possible to use Task Sequence capture media to create a WIM image. Then ImageX is not needed. Just rightclick on Task Sequences in SCCM and choose "Create Task Sequence Media". After that choose capture media for creating the OS image, This posts explains the capture media: How to Capture an Image from a Reference Computer by Using Capture Media: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694129.aspx And on my blogsite: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com/2011/03/create-task-sequence-capture-media.html My ConfigMgr blog: http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com Follow me on Twitter: @henkhoogendoorn
