Deploy Software Updates and Applications

Hi There,

We are running Configuration Manager 2012 SP1.  I would like to setup a deployment that consists of Windows Updates via Software Updates and using Application packages possibly through a Software Task Sequence.  Not sure if it will work.  Has anyone setup something like this?

Or would it better to run separate deployments, one Software Update Deployment and the other an application package? If I deploy both at the same time, would there be an issue?

Thanks!

If you want to create an ongoing solution that should work for you even after this one occasion, I'd suggest strongly to separate things. Software deployments are one thing and software updates are another thing.

Why would you want to deploy a TS that consists both of these? What's the reason for doing things like that? There will not be any issues if you deploy them at the same time, both will happen.

I would keep them separate.  Let Software Updates handle their own deployments.  There is no need to put them together. As for them both at the same time, there is no problem at all.  If you have many clients, you may look at deploying them on different days.  Either way, there really is no special consideration to be had.  These are both normal tasks.

Can you provide a little more detail as to why you want to take this approach? I'm willing to bet there may be a better approach depending on the desired outcome.

Thanks for the advice guys.  We operate in a production environment 24/7 and is critical that we impact users at a minimal level.  I figured deploying all in one task sequence would impact them less.  I think I will just go with a separate deployments and deploy them at the same time.

Thanks!
