Dell XPS 13 - USB NIC Drivers to Boot Image
Has anyone been able to successfully add USB NIC drivers (Lenovo K33905 or other USB NIC) to the Boot Image and have them picked up on a Dell XPS 13? I have added the ASIX drivers (AX88772A_760_772_Win7_64bit_Driver_v3) for the Lenovo K33905, but they don't get picked up by the Dell XP 13 when applied to the Boot.wim. As you would expect, the below error message was received which I believe is a limitation of the hardware. The same drivers were successfully used to apply a Win7 image on a Mac Air Book, so I know the drivers were successfully added to the Boot Image. "Failed to find a valid network adapter. For more information, please contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator. Any advice, suggestions, or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

the only thing i can think of is to boot up a system with the full os already installed on it, pull the required network drivers from it and add those drivers to your boot wim. have you tried that ? Step by Step ConfigMgr 2007 Guides | Step by Step ConfigMgr 2012 Guides | I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Like Niall says.. and here is a small guide on how http://blog.coretech.dk/mip/finding-and-adding-only-the-correct-device-driver-to-the-boot-image/ You can test the driver prior to injection, using the WinPE tool DrvLoad . Just put your drivers on a USB, and then test them from a command prompt (F8) once in WiinPE.Michael Petersen | My blogs: blog.coretech.dk/author/mip/ and SCUG.dk/ | Twitter: @OSDeploy | Linkedin: Michael Petersen

I was having the same problem until I added all of and USB drivers (3.0) for the Dell XPS 13 to the Boot image. The USB port on left side is USB 2.0 which doesn't require you to add drivers since they are built into WinPE/Win7 but the USB port on the right side of the XPS 13 is USB 3.0 which does requires you to add the USB drivers to the boot image otherwise the device plugged into the right side will not be recognized once WinPE loads. Additional Info: If you don't want to mess with adding the USB 3.0 drivers to your WinPE Boot images in order to get the USB port on the right side working properly, get yourself a USB Hub and use the left USB port to connect the nic dongle and the boot device (Flash Drive or DVD/CD). I find it interesting that Yogi Li marked Niall and Michael's replies as the answer when I bet none of them, including Yogi Li, have tried imaging a Dell Latatude XPS 13 which has no built-in Ethernet port. (Only two USB ports).

Other systems that exhibit this same behavior are the ASUS Zenbook UX31, Apple MacBook Air plus I expect most of the new Ultrabook form factor systems that only have USB ports and no built-in ethernet port will have this same problem.

Be careful imaging this way if you are just using 1 USB Nic to image multiple machines. I believe SCCM won't handle the computer records well. When we tested usb boot using the dell targus dock if we plugged the dock into the left port and usb stick into right it would image however freeze during windows install. If we plugged the devices in the other way around the dock would not get recognised in time and sccm would say Failed to find a valid network adapter which wasn't reallly the case because if we ran the sccm initialize line after that error from F8 it would image successfully. Dell may be providing pxe boot support for that dock which should get rid of the need for the usb boot/cd.
