Deleting Software Packages and Software Storage
Hello, I have the following indistinctness: I use already SCE 2007 to deploy manuell added software packages. Some of the packages greater than 1GB. The software packages was successfully deployed to the clients. Now some packages are to old and some newer Software is available. Since it isn't possible to edit existing software packages, so I need to delete these. The removal ofthe packages with the SCE 2007 Console was successfull, but the files are still in the SCE directory? Is there an automaticremoval procedure for that? Is there a way to start the removal procedure with the SCE 2007 Console? At the moment it looks like, that I need to delete the files manually from the SCE directory... Please for help. Hopefully there is some further information. regards, Reisenhofer Andreas

Hi Reisenhofer,Please do not directly delete the packages under "updateservicepackage" folder. try the following steps to check whether the package will disappear from the SCE console:Download WSUS server diagnostic tool from this website:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/wsus/bb466192.aspxAfter installing, please run the following command to delete the expired update files:wsusdebugtool /tool: purgeunneededfiles--------------------Regards,Eric Zhang

Hello Zhang,Sorry for the late answer, but I didn't get any email that there was a new answer...maybe you wait the next time some more days Thank you for your answerThe package was manuelly deleted through the SCE console, but the files still on the drive. In the SCE console I don't find the package - only on the drive...I also tried the diagnostic tool.Is this procedore the same, which I find in the WSUS console under Options => Assistant in server-cleaning(hopefully that the translation is correct => it is German here...)Now I geht the following answer...>>>D:\SCS\Diagnostic>wsusdebugtool /toolurgeunneededfilesRunning... Hi Reisenhofer,If the software package disappear from the SCE console, you can directly delete it under UpdateServicesPackages folder.--------------------Regards,Eric Zhang

That means, there is only a manual way for deleting old files. It isn't much user friendly. Maybe I'm able to put this as feature request: There should be an automatic way, that deleted Software packages through the SCE Console should also delete the files under "UpdateServicesPackages"...

Hello Eric, We are running into a similar issue as Reisenhofer. We are running SCE 2007 SP1 (version 6.0.1885.0). We have been choosing to delete old software packages from within the System Center Essential console. Once they are deleted there, we are finding that the folders in E:\SCE\UpdateServicesPackages are not being removed. I have read through this posting and the one at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/systemcenter/thread/8e041aed-6162-43bc-b0bc-260800102b76. In both situations you recommended running wsusdebugtool /tool: purgeunneededfiles. From what I'm seeing above, that tool only removes Updates, not software packages. At the end of this post you said that once we have removed a software package from the System Center Essential console we could then delete them from the UpdateServicesPackagesfolder. We are having a problem with this. All of the folders/packages in the UpdateServicesPackagesfolder are listed with what I believe is their GUID. How am I to determine which folders should be deleted?Presuming this is all working the way it was designed how do I submit something to the SCE team to get it fixed. It seems ridiculous that the SCE would leave the package folders remaining forever. It seems that it is a horrible waste of hard drive space. Hello, We have the same problem here : SCE\UpdateServicesPackages grow and grow.... Old applications deleted with sce interface, then wsusdebugtool, then wsus graphic interface, but still remains on disk. It's a feature or a bug ?;-)

I've encountered this on my SCE 2010 server too. Today I spent some time auditing which folders in the UpdateServicesPackages directory were files from updates I'd removed using the SCE console. I found more than 8GB of bloat in more than 70 packages I'd deleted over the last year. I'll be posting on my blog later today with details of a PowerShell script I used to get a list of valid update GUIDs, which I then compared with the list of folders to find the ones that corresponded to previously deleted updates.
