Default permission levels for MOSS 2007
According to Microsoft TechNet reference (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721640(office.12).aspx), I should get 6 default permission levels for MOSS 2007 server.
However, for my installation, I only have 5 permission levels with "View Only" missing. The installer I used was the "en_sharepoint_server_2007_with_sp2_x86_dvd_x16-57176.iso" image downloaded from MSDN subscription web site. Why is it missing?
Was it excluded on purpose and why?

Hi,
Something is always mystery in sharepoint. Even i have got 8 permission level when i installed the sharepoint. But i really don't care about it because there is very nice feature that we can create a custom permission.
I think, you also should not worry and if you need read only right then create your own permission level.
These are my permission levels:
Full Control
Has full control.
Design
Can view, add, update, delete, approve, and customize.
Manage Hierarchy
Can create sites and edit pages, list items, and documents.
Approve
Can edit and approve pages, list items, and documents.
Contribute
Can view, add, update, and delete.
Read
Can view only.
Restricted Read
Can view pages and documents, but cannot view historical versions or review user rights information.
Limited Access
Can view specific lists, document libraries, list items, folders, or documents when given permissions.

Thanks for your reply. So I tried to create a new permission level with the exact permissions that "View Only" has but I just couldn't select "View Versions" without selecting "Open Items". Every time I select "View Versions", "Open Items" is
selected automatically. What I want is to have the exact permissions that "View Only" has:
List Permissions:
View Items
View Versions
Create Alerts
View Application Pages
with Site Permissions:
Use Self-Service Site Creation
View Pages
Browse User Information
Use Remote Interfaces
Use Client Integration Features
Open
Any idea how I can create a permission level as above? Thanks.

Hi,
this is the design behavior and you have to give the "Open Item" permission also because if you don't give this permission then how will you check the version of item. Don't worry about this just select both of them.

I'm trying to make the development and UAT environments the same. My users are using the "View Only" permission level in UAT and I don't have it in my development machine.
This is going out to Microsoft. If I can't create my own permission level just like "View Only", is there a hot fix for my development machine?

Hi,
I don't think, there is any hotfix available for this. You have to create it manually OR you may search any tool in codeplex to create permission level.
Hope this will helpCheers, Hemendra-MCTS "Yesterday is just a memory,Tomorrow we may never see"
