Data Warehouses for System Center

Hi All,

please excuse the rookie question but I am performing my first installation of both SCCM and SCSM for my organization and I am not quite sure how to handle the design.

Essentially my issue is that we are not having an abundance of disk space right now, and in looking at the typical design documentation I am thinking I will need at least 4 servers to implement both of these tools, the thing is, we only have 400 PCs which means that the Data Warehouse solution would appear to be massively over-engineered and I won't get access to the reporting tools without the Data Warehouse.

What I would like to do is run both tools without a Data Warehouse or at least put the Data Warehouse on the same server which for that number of clients should be fine, however there are issues trying to install both on the same server.

So the question is basically, is there a way to get both the data warehouse and the operations databases on the same servers or perhaps share the SCCM and SCOM data warehouses on the same server so I only need one Data Warehouse server?

If not, Are there any real implications for not using a Data Warehouse aside from the lack of reporting? I am a little nervous that maybe data in the operations server may be discarded under the assumption that "after xxx days" it won't be needed any more and that it "should be in the data warehouse for reporting".

If I can run without a data warehouse I may just build a simple reporting web page for a few key reports or something.

Thanks

Put SCCM and it's database on a dedicated server, it's database shouldn't be co-located with anything else and since the managed client number is as low as yours, there's no point separating the SCCM database from the site server itself.

SCCM has it's own reporting capabilities, you do not need SCSM for reporting with ConfigMgr.

That is what I have at the moment. It is good to know there is no need for Data Warehouses in SCCM for reporting. Do you know if there is any reason that I would NEED a data warehouse with SCCM? I am just worried that the suggested models in the design document do not include a solution where there is none and I can't see anywhere what the implications are of not having one.

I have one server with SCCM and it's database, SCSM is a different server but I threw it in the detail because IF I need the Data Warehouse I would like to put the SCSM and SCCM data warehouses on the same server.

You do not need a separate datawarehouse for ConfigMgr, even if you plan to integrate it with SCSM, you only use the SCSM's datawarehouse as an import target for the stuff that's in the ConfigMgr database.

This picture might help you to figure out what I'm trying to explain:

I think that has answered a lot of my concerns, thanks for your feedback.
