DTEXEC to run package to backup SQL Server Express database
Sorry if this question is redundant to others covering DTEXEC. I want to be able to backup SQL Server Express databases with all the functionality of using maintenance plans under full SQL Server. I want the names of the backup files to be datestamped, and I want to include cleanup functionality to delete old backup files. I'm aware that a SQL Server Express installation doesn't have the ability to build maintenance plans with those features, or run jobs like SQL Agent. Can I build a package in SSIS under SQL Server Standard, then simply copy DTEXEC.EXE and a .dtsx package to a server with only SQL Server Express installed, and run the package from a command line or using Task Scheduler? Thanks.

I suppose it may be possible, but I'd bet it would be in violation of the SQL Server licencing agreements. Craig Bryden - Please mark correct and/or helpful answers

Hi District9, Unfortunately, we can not run Integration Services packages on Express - with or without SQL Agent. SQL Server Standard or Enterprise is required to design and run Integration Services packages. The Integration Services features that are installed by Workgroup, Web, and Express are only for use by the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard. For more details about it, please see Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008 R2 Thanks, Eileen

However, if you have a central Standard Edition SQL Server, it CAN run IS packages, and can remotely connect to and run backups and other manipulations on remote servers. Talk to me now on
