DPM 2012 shows incorrect unallocated space on disk storage pool

Hi,

I recently built a new DPM 2012 SP1 roll-up 1v2 server. Initial it was as a test and it had a 1TB of storage assigned to it for disk based backups. I have now moved the DPM server into a production role and needed additional backup storage space so i have increased the storage to 4TB.

Windows has recognized the increase in storage and shows the additional 3TB of space available in disk manager as per the screenshot below.

DPM however recognizes the increased storage but doesn't recognize that there is 3TB of free capacity as per the screenshot below.

I have performed a rescan of the disks and a reboot of the server but so far it has not changed the unallocated space.

I have had a look at the various DPM PowerShell commands but I cant see anything along the lines of rescan for unallocated space.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jeremy

Hi,

Start the DPM power shell - then run these series of command, then copy / paste the output in this thread.

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin> get-dpmdisk dpm-server-name
   ...OUTPUT IS RETURNED..

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin> diskpart.exe

Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7600

On computer: LC2-DPMLIB1

DISKPART> list disk
   ... OUTPUT IS RETURNED ...

DISKPART> exit

Leaving DiskPart...
PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\b

Thank you for the response but due to time constraints I removed the additional 3TB from the iSCSI LUN and created a new one. I then updated DPM and all is working. If I have time in the future I will investigate again.

Hi Mike!

I have just the same problem - I am unable to create any more protection groups as it seems there is no more space available. I am a complete newbie to servers, Windows and DPM, and struggle to understand the issues.

I have run your commands, and here is the output.

PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin> diskpart.exe

Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7601
Copyright (C) 1999-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: OSS-DPM01LAB

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
  --------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
  Disk 0    Online           50 GB      0 B
  Disk 1    Online          900 GB    63 GB   *

But if I understand this correctly, I have a lot more than 63 GB available:

Have no clue what to do to be able to use this space, and will deeply appreciate your advice to a confused neewbie.

Kind regards, Mrs. Siri-Brit Smming from Norway

Hi,

Each data source you protect requires two volumes, a replica and recovery point volume.  The volume sizes are calculated based on protected data size and retention period.  Once created that space is remove from available space on the storage pool disk.   Some data sources that allow for co-location (sql, client and hyper-V) will created volumes to hold many datasources so DPM will pre-allocate a large chuck of space even if you protect a single datasource.  That is what appears to have happened for the 241GB volume you show in the screen shot.

Anyways, the free space you highlighted is free space for that datasource, and cannot be re-used for new data sources.

See this TechNet article so you can redo some protection and use more reasonable volume sizes.

Thank you for your reply, Mike! Guess I need to gain some more understanding on how DPM works with volumes and space and so on. I`ll keep reading your posts and TechNet articles.

I removed the protection group and got more available space, though not enough. But I found a workaround, instead of taking SQL backup, I created a maintenance plan on the SQL server, and use DPM for filebackup. Works for now:-)
