DPM 2012 cannot reserve tape drive after failed drive cleaning job

Hi All

I've recently upgrade to DPM 2012 from 2007 and everything was going fine until a drive cleaning operation failed (I'm using a DELL TL2000). I have run the dell diagnostics and everything passes ok however every DPM long term protection job fails with the following error

'DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of the required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)'

Looking at the library it shows the Drive (in use: 0/Idle: 1)

Any help with this would most appreciated.

Hi,

please check:

  • last cleaning date of your drive provided by SDCPM
  • are drive and library available in SCDPM
  • disable Auto cleaning and dedicated Cleaning Slot on your Tape Library, SCDPM needs to clean by himself.

Hi,

Check this blog and see if DPMDB thinks the drive is still dirty.

BLOG-DPM tape jobs take longer than expected or fail with ID 24052

Hi Seidl

I've had a look into the DPM Database and in the tbl_MM_Global_TapeDrive table the last cleaning date is Null. Therefore DPM thinks that its not carried out any drive cleaning operations. The drive itself is not indicating that it needs cleaning either.

Both the drive and library are available in SCDPM.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,

I had a look at the blog you gave me however I could not get the script to run successfully but I copied the SQL query from the script and ran it on the DPM database in the SQL manager. The query ran fine but did not list any drives that needed cleaning.

Thanks for your help with this.

Just a quick update, the issue is now resolved.

I decided to take a radical approach to this issue -  made a backup of the DPM database, removed all long term backups from my protection groups and dived into the SQL manager, identified which tables where linked to the library, tape drive etc and deleted the records in each table! Opened DPM console, went management window and as expected there was no library or tape drive listed, clicked rescan and the library and drive re-appeared. Everything back to normal.

I would not recommend this approach but I have been working/searching for a fix for this issue for a number of weeks now with no luck. It was becoming more apparent that the only other fix would be to re-install DPM.

Thanks to all that provided me with help.
