DPM 2012 and corrupted files or folders

I'v noticed that DPM 2012 protection job will stop backing up if one file or folder is corrupted. Why is that DPM will not continue backing other data? is there a way to configure it, which it will just bypass the corrupted file or folder and go on backing up?

Here is the error message :

The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\?\Volume{9762dc47-54e7-11dd-bd38-00215a506db1}\path/filename on  ServerName. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))

It was a powerpoint file that's it says it was corrupted but I am able to open and work on the that file OK.

Thanks

Hi,

DPM should skip files that cannot be backed up.  We skip 100 files by default. Are you certain there is not an alert similar to this with a pointer to an exception list ?

<snip>
Description: The replica of Volume D:\ on <servername> is inconsistent with the protected data source. Number of files skipped for synchronization due to errors has exceeded the maximum allowed limit of 100 files on this data source (ID 32538 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FE)
>snip<

In any case run chkdsk /f against the volume in question to fix the corruption.

Hi Mike,

In looking closely at the errors, yes I do see a similar error message to the one you posted. I was to backup that server with Backup Exe with no issues.

Did you run chkdsk /f  \\?\Volume{9762dc47-54e7-11dd-bd38-00215a506db1}\ on the protected server ?  The error 0x80070570 "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." is being returned by Windows and DPM is just the victim of that error.

You can run mountvol.exe to see what that volume GUID maps to and run a chkdsk against the drive letter instead.  It could also be the replica volume guid on the DPM Server, so if that guid is not on the PS, see if mountvol.exe lists it on the DPM Server and if so, run chkdsk /f against it.

Anyone have a better answer to this than running chkdsk.  I have been fighting this for a while on a few volumes.  I have tried removing the whole DPM volume and starting over and still continue to receive the error that the files are corrupt or unreadable.  Is there a way to just skip this files and let the backups continue?

Do we get the same alert if we backup data directly to Tape(D2T) using DPM?

Getting error: The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy50\Sections\Human Resources\4 Learning and Development\TRAINING REPORTS\Training 13-14\13-14 Records.xlsx on  File2.clc.org.au. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID: 2036). Suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

For Disk to Tape backup, DPM will not skip corrupt files, so you will need to investigate further.

Since DPM always backs up from a VSS shadow copy, if the shadow copy goes away due to low disk space / performance or resource issues, then the backup will fail sine we cannot read from the shadow copy.

Check system event log on the protected server for events from VOLSNAP, or the application event log for VSS errors.  If that is not the issue, try opening the file in the message and see if you have any problems, if so run chkdsk and try again.
