DPM 2012 R2 Hyper-V Online Vs Offline Backup

Hi,

I have installed DPM Server 2012 R2 on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 bit OS and uses BAckup on Disk.

MY All  hyper-V Machines are also hosted on  Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 bit  hyper-V Host, Some Virtual Machiness are of server 2008 R2 and some of Server 2012 R2..

While I am creating the Protection Group for taking the Backup of Virtual Machines  I am getting the Description for Server 2008 R2 VM as Backup using Child Partitions Snapshots   and the description for Server 2012 R2 as Backup using Saved State..

hence i am looking for the differences between two uses terms of Hyper-V VMs Backup  as Backup using Child Partitions Snapshots  and Backup using Saved State here. also how can i solve the description Backup using Saved State

thanks Mike..

I have configured the Registry Key as below Link but still the Backup State of Server 2012 R2 VMs are showing as Backup Using Saved State\VMName in DPM Backup as well as Hyper-V host Server.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

REG_DWORD:ScopeSnapshots:0x0

please suggest solution this is very critical for me.

Hi,

I'm guessing it may have something to do with the built-in integration components in Windows server 2012 R2 that may not be fully compatible with Windows 2008 R2 hyper-V host.

As per the: About Virtual Machines and Guest Operating Systems - Windows 2012 R2 is not officially supported as a guest.

<snip>
Windows Server 2012 is the last version of Windows that will be supported as a guest operating system on this platform. There will be no further additions to the list of supported Windows guest operating systems.
>snip<

You may need to upgrade to Windows 2012 Hyper-V before Backup using Child Partitions Snapshots is possible for Windows 2012 R2 guests.

FYI - When a DPM 2012 R2 UR3 server or later is protecting a Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v host, all VM backups are done online, there are no longer saved state (offline) backups and true block level tracking is achieved for faster backups.

Hi,

No -that alone will not help you because your hyper-V server is still running Server 2008 R2.  You would need to upgrade that to Windows 2012 R2 before the new DPM feature could be utilized.
