DPM 2012 R2 End-user recovery permissions update failed, end-user recovery not working

With a fresh install of DPM 2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2, every sever for which protection was enabled generated a warning alert as follows:

Failed to update permissions used for end-user recovery on server05.domain.com. Permissions update failed for the following reason: (ID 3123)

DPM is unable to enumerate contents in 986760a90b0a43799a4c7deacab2b6d5 ,fece6105f7a04d1699b788a5513ad726 on the protected computer SERVER07.domain.com. Recycle Bin, System Volume Information folder, non-NTFS volumes, DFS links, CDs, Quorum Disk (for cluster) and other removable media cannot be protected. (ID 38 Details: )

These alerts have not been regenerated but they have not auto-resolved either. There was some difficulty running the AD prep tool originally but it has since been successfully run on one of the domain controllers.

Some attempts were also made to hack around with the shares DPM creates through the DiscardUNCPrefix registry key, and the shares for some of the data sources showing warnings now do NOT have the \\?\ prefix.

End-user recovery is also not working in the DPM Client, even for a user with Domain Admin rights and specifically added to the local Administrators group, which I suspect is due to the other warnings. The Recovery tab shows the following error:

DPM found no recovery points for which you are authorized to restore on the specified DPM server. You can restore only those recovery points for which you were an administrator at the time the backup was taken. To restore other recovery points, contact your DPM administrator, or attempt to restore from another DPM.

Several recovery points have been created successfully since adding the user to the local Administrators group explicitly.
